Life has a strange way of replicating itself. From the seed, comes the plant. From the womb, comes the child. From the universe, comes a galaxy. From a galaxy, comes a star. From a star, comes a solar system. From a solar system comes planet earth. Look around you, notice that everything replicates itself. Replication is a universal law in the universe; endless replication is all there is from one end of the universe to the other. Nothing ever really dies. It only replicates itself over time, endless time, it seems.
Life may be nothing more than a dream inside a dream inside another dream replicating itself many times over, so many times that we cannot tell which dream is the true reality, if there is even such a thing. Maybe there is no true reality at all. Maybe, what we call reality is nothing more than a dream in the mind of God, and human beings are no more than mere figments of God's imagination. Maybe, the only reality in the universe, and beyond its boundaries, is only God, whatever God is.
How do we know, then, that we exist? We don't. We can't, because we don't fully understand what life means yet. Furthermore, we know not where we come from before we arrive at life, and we know not where go, when we leave this life. There is so much that we do not understand beyond the boundaries of birth and death, and the time in between the two, that it is impossible to know that we truly exist. It may feel like we exist, but a feeling does not (cannot) prove that we truly exist. The whole of this experience is shrouded in mystery. The deeper we dig into life, the more mysterious it seems to be.
Life must be a dream. Think back, to many a time, when we have awakened from a dream so real, that we awaken only all too relieved by the realization that what we thought was real was actually but a dream. Yet, while in the dream state, we could have sworn that what we were living in our dream was real, and yet it wasn't and we know this, because we awoke from that dream. Life is like that dream. It seems real, it feels real, it looks real. Yet, actually, it's only a dream, just like the dream that we awoke from which seemed so real.
I once read that, in the beginning, God emerged from the Void to create the universe. We can equate the Void to the Unseen, and the Unseen to the Invisible. This might mean, then, that the true reality in the universe, and what lies beyond its boundaries, is not what can be seen but what cannot be seen. Is it not strange that the most powerful things in the universe are invisible? Electricity, nuclear power, wind, sunlight, all are invisible. Human feelings, emotions, thought, too, are invisible. And, of course, so is God. Is this not so?
Life, then, must be but a dream, a dream that feels real, yet when we die, it is then that we awake to the realization that what we called life was nothing more than a mere dream. And that what we awaken to, then, is real life, eternal, infinite life.
How do we know that we exist? We don't. We can't, but in the end, it doesn't matter. Because whatever life is, all that matters, in the end, is that God has everything in the universe (and beyond) under control; therefore, whether we exist in this life or not is insignificant. Because no matter what we are, or where we are, we are safe, no matter what happens.
