Assuming that the regular characters in Deep Space Nine were not simply having a bad dream about themselves, they all had evil alter egos from a parallel universe, called Terok Nor. Season 3 Episode 9 Through the Looking Glass http://www.startrek.com/startr ek/view/series/DS9/episode/682 14.html
There were also some relatively benevolent characters, perhaps precursors of the regular characters, described in Season 6 Episode 13 Far Beyond the Stars http://www.startrek.com/startr ek/view/series/DS9/episode/719 32.html Indeed, characters from Far Beyond the Stars recur to the point of being the only real characters, while the regular Deep Space Nine characters are possibly only a dream of Benny Russell, who is Ben Sisko's alter ego in this episode. Benny is a science fiction writer, among other writers and characters who strangely, or familiarly. resemble Kira, Odo, Dax, O'Brien, Bashir, Kasidy, Worf, Jake, Dukat and Weyoun, among others. Ben Sisko's father in the regular cast appears as an unrelated street preacher who appears to discern the fate of Benny Russell's attempt to free 1953 America from its embedded racial prejudice against African Americans.
Without a doubt, the most evil character in the parallel universe, Terok Nor, was the alter ego of Kira Nerys, who is the terroristic ruler of Terok Nor. She employs the regularly rather kind Garak character, as her chief aide and executioner in Terok Nor. The evil Kira also employs, Jennifer, who was Ben Sisko's loving wife in the regular character role, as a tool of the evil Kira. Jennifer is working to help the evil Kira defeat the rebels. The alter egos are as thoroughly evil as they were good in their regular characters. And perhaps vice versa. Some evil regular characters may have been somewhat less evil in the parallel universe, although I do not recall any thoroughly good characters among the alter egos. The were all so desperate to escape the evil that was Terok Nor, that morality was the last thing on their minds.
The first thing on the minds of the Terok Nor characters was usually sex, or really sexual power. The evil Kira being a bisexual predator, attempts to seduce anyone within her grasp. Dax is the wimpy sex slave of Ben Sisko's evil alter ego. Ben's alter ego is killed off somehow, and the regular Ben Sisko is recruited to enter Terok Nor to help the rebels defeat the evil Kira. Ben's main task turns out to be winning over Jennifer to the rebel side, especially because Jennifer is about to create a means for evil Kira to root out and kill all the rebels.
Anyone who has worked on a major movie set, where some actors get to play the bad guys, knows just how much fun it can be to play a bad guy. Work on a movie set is often extremely boring, long hours of nothing, alternating with extreme fatigue caused by shooting the same scene over and over. Playing a bad guy can be a source of humor and a stress breaker. I am sure the regular Deep Space Nine characters had some fun being the bad guys.
