Does sex education in schools encourage teens to have sex?

My grandma got pregnant with my mom when she was 16. Her parents had told her that kissing would get her pregnant. With that in mind and armed with what she and my grandpa thought was knowledge they did everything but kiss in the back seat of his car. They ended up pregnant, married, and unprepared for the life that they would lead. If they had learned the truth in school would they have been encouraged to have sex or would they have been armed with the proper knowledge?

The Purpose of Sex Education.

Because a lot of parents haven't, didn't, and still don't talk to their children about sex (or give them false information) it was decided that something had to be done. It was then that schools started teaching sex education. While the system isn't perfect and it is hard to get all the facts into a short period of time, it is important to arm students with the truth.

But Teenagers Are Having Sex!

It is worth saying again. But teenagers are still having sex, lots of it. While it is true that teenagers are having sex and sex education doesn't really change that, it is important that they know what is happening to them, what the possible outcomes are, and what can happen if you have sex. There are a number of things that should be kept in mind. Teenagers are surrounded by a whole world that screams sex. The world is one that is very sexual and teenagers are likely to have sex whether they know much about it or not.

Teenage Pregnancy.

In addition to teenagers continuing to have sex, teenage pregnancy is on the rise. We have tried teaching abstinence only to find that it doesn't work. Many schools have tried to teach safe sex and often find that this doesn't work as well. Where we should turn to make sure our teenagers are safe is hard to know. It is highly likely that parents are going to have to step up and take a more active role in trainging their teenagers and letting them know about sex in all its glory and its risks.

Sex education is there to try and teach our teenagers important information and correct information that they aren't getting else where. It is true that they continue to have sex and many of them even continue to have unsafe sex. However, the relationship isn't really there. Most, if not all, of these teenagers would engage in sexual activity whether they were armed with the proper information or not. The real question that we need to solve now is how to get them to practice safe (or safer) sex.
