Spring has sprung and it is time to start looking for the perfect shoe to get you through the summer. Designer's showcased their spring/summer '09 collections this past fall and at long last the newest trends have hit the stores. Here is a look at the latest styles, colors and heel heights that will be pounding the pavement this summer.
Flats
Although flats only made a relatively small appearance in the fashion shows, they are the perennial favorite for summertime activities and there are options. Most notably the Grecian inspired flat sandal. Designers such as Armani presented almost their entire collection of Summer 09 fashion paired with these often strappy (often metallic) sandals.
Flat fringed sandals also made a huge statement on the catwalks with designer Dennis Basso using them prolifically throughout his show. These fun slip-ons are reminiscent of the 70's and compliment the "boho chic" trend that started popping up last season.
Heels
Heels had the strongest presence on the runways and came in a variety of styles. The most common style seen and also a trend continuing from last summer, was the gladiator sandal. Every heel type was on hand for this trend, from super high stiletto's to comfy wedges. Regardless of heel size they all offered miles of straps to wind up your leg or tie neatly around the ankle.
Wedges and platforms also had their moment to shine, paired most often with fun flirty dresses or high waisted shorts this is a trend that has transcended time. Celebrity favorite, Monique Lhuillier offered quite the show using leather, canvas, and metallics to update this classic shoe.
Whether you prefer flats or heels, a growing trend at fashion week, was the appearance of bondage shoes. A cousin to the gladiator sandal these shoes offer a more aggressive look and are often embellished with grommets and metallic studs. The straps on this style can sometimes wrap up past the knee and is only for the most daring fashionista. Vivienne Westwood, Christian Dior and Iceberg all presented their collections using this adventurous style.
Colors
Black and brown will always be favorites when it comes to shoe color. But if you want to try something a bit more bold, metallics are the way to go. Shiny silver and gold shoes walked the runway for almost every designer and in every style. Not to be out done, prints and bold colors also made a statement and can offer a touch of color and fantasy to an otherwise blah ensemble.
Variety is key this summer and there is shoe to match any style. So whether you are looking for a classic flat or a sky high wedge, the choice is yours!
