How to take measurements for a man's suit

by Paul M

So you need to hire a tuxedo for your friend's 21st or to buy a swish suit for your wedding? Perhaps you're even going to buy a suit online. How to begin?

Most guys have no idea how what measurements they need to get the perfect fit in a suit. Follow these simple steps and you'll be looking dapper in no time!

JACKET:

1) Chest size: Pass the measuring tape under your armpits, across your back and across the front of your chest at the widest point. The tape should be level all the way round. Breath normally and place a finger beneath the tape and your chest while measuring. This is your chest measurement. It is the same as your suit measurement (eg: if you have a 42 inch chest, you will wear a size 42 suit).

2) Jacket length: Measure from the base of your neck (where the bottom of your shirt collar would be) to just below where your buttocks curve in. This is the measurement for jacket length.
3) Sleeve length: Measure from the seam on your shoulder to a point just below your wrist. This is your required jacket sleeve length.

TROUSERS: Wear a comfortable pair of trousers that fits well.

1) Waist measurement: Pass the measuring tape around your waistline where your trousers normally sit. Don't pull the tape too tight - allow a finger's breadth or so of extra room. This is your waist measurement.
2) Out-leg measurement: Measure on the outside of your leg, from the top of the trousers to the point where the leg meets the ankle or just below. This is your out-leg measurement.
3) Inner leg measurement: Measure from your crotch to the point where the leg meets the ankle or just below. This is your inner leg measurement.

Armed with these simple measurements, you can now hire a tux or purchase a suit, confident that you'll get a fine fit every time!
