The Lakeland Terrier originates from Lake District county of Cumberland and is referenced by some experts as being formerly known as the "Patterdale Terrier". The main development of this breed was intended as a work dog for the protection of domestic lambs from wild foxes and as a hunting dog for small animals. The Patterdale and Lakeland were once grouped together and referred to as Fell Terriers. Several breeds contribute to what is seen in the modern Lakeland Terrier including Border, Bedlington, and the Dandie Dinmont Terriers. It is also believed that the Fox Terrier may have influenced this breed at some point.
The Lakeland Terrier resembles a smaller version of the Airedale Terrier. The height averages 14 1/2 inches at the shoulders and weighs approximately 15-17 pounds. The coat is quite dense and coarse and the undercoat is weather-resistant. The Lakeland Terrier requires minimal bathing and grooming. Due to the coat being thick and fast-growing, professional trimming may be required unless an owner learns how to clip the coat. Most Terrier breeds including the Lakeland are minimal-shedders and are recommended for those who suffer from allergies.
Typical coat colors include black and tan, blue and tan, red, wheaten, red grizzle, liver, blue, and black. Mahogany and deep tan colors are seen but are uncommon. The tips of the feet and the chest may have some white but is considered "undesirable" by breeders. The eye color ranges from a dark tone to hazel and the tail is typically docked. The ears are "V" shaped and the jaws are described as "powerful".
Following World War I, a Lakeland Terrier breed club was formed which led to the Kennel Club in Britain recognizing the breed in 1921. The breed became highly desirable after a Lakeland Terrier named "Champion Stingray of Derryabah" won Best in Show at the London Crufts Dog Show. This was followed a year later when the win was repeated in New York at the Westminster Dog Show.
Depending upon the breeder, the cost of the Lakeland Terrier can range from $700 to $1500. This is a tireless breed that should be kept as an indoor pet but allowed adequate outdoor freedom. Bred as a sporting dog, the Lakeland Terrier requires an ample amount of exercise. This highly intelligent dog has been referred to as an excellent guard dog that is also family oriented and behaves well with children. This breed suits well with individuals and families that have sufficient time for play and interaction with an active dog. The Lakeland Terrier is currently recognized as an official breed by the AKC, ANKC, CKC, FCI, KC (GB), and KUSA.
