Learning to Express Yourself as a Writer
You've been writing for a while now. You have the mechanics of it down pat for the most part. Still, your word choice could be a little smoother, and it wouldn't hurt to improve your vocabulary. With these things in mind, you set out to reach a broader audience and express yourself more clearly. After all, conquering mechanics and improving vocabulary are only half the battle. The real test of your effectiveness as a writer is how the reader responds to your work.
There are several ways to improve your writing, among them playing word games, brushing up on your literary skills, and taking classes to help you learn the basics of punctuation and communication. You can also improve your effectiveness as a writer in a host of other ways that promise to challenge and improve your skills.
1. Familiarize yourself with your topic. You need to do more than ample research if you want to impress your readers. It is vital that you become one with your subject material, letting the topic come to life.
2. Use accurate research. Check and recheck your facts. If you can't paraphrase certain segments, quote your material correctly, and cite your facts in the appropriate format.
3. Develop your ideas thoroughly. Share everything you know. You can always edit redundancies later, after you have included all the information.
4. Improve your language skills. During your research, you have an opportunity to explore new ways to express data. Take the time to expand your expertise, and incorporate different dialog into your writing.
5. Meditate on your topic. Don't just regurgitate what you have studied. Allow it to infiltrate the very essence of your being. Let it become one with your personal voice and style.
6. Participate in writing groups and classes. It is important to have a sense of belonging. You will benefit from being part of a larger organization of writers, sharing common goals and visions together.
7. Analyze and critique other literary works. You will gain a lot of insight by being a member of the audience. You will understand how others judge good and bad writing, and learn to adjust yours accordingly.
8. Get feedback from others. Learn to see your work as others perceive it. Don't take their comments personally. Be open to how you are presenting your topic to an audience.
9. Read everything you can. The benefits of reading cannot be overemphasized. You will learn about different genres, discover how to express things in several ways, and become acquainted with topics you might never have considered writing about, only to find out that they are truly quite fascinating.
10. Take your time. You are revealing a part of yourself through the written word. Be patient, and let it come to life at the proper time. If you need to, write a rough draft, put it away for a day, and reread it later before submitting it to your audience.
11. Practice your writing. The more you write, the better you'll get at it. It's the same with anything you do. If you spend more time doing it, you'll improve based on the effort you apply.
12. Be yourself. It doesn't matter if you are writing a research paper, or an autobiography. If you try to hide your own voice, your work will not be as effective.
Using these tips will help you become a better writer, while enabling you to enjoy the craft you have chosen to develop. Writing will always be much more than merely putting words on paper for anyone willing to develop their talent. It will be an adventure in communication and expression that taps into the world at large.
