Do Handicap Accessible Vacation Spots Exist?

These must be the world's best kept secrets. At least, they are elusive and maybe even nonexistent. Travel destinations that are truly handicap accessible for all would most certainly be very popular. They would attract the able-bodied as well as the physically challenged.

An ideal handicap accessible travel destination would be one which has overnight accommodations that are totally barrier free, comfortable, aesthetically beautiful, and safe. It would be one that invites all to move freely about, either with companions or on their own. Ideally, the travelers would find accommodations where they could settle down for the duration of the vacation and explore nearby vicinities. The handicapped people I know would love many of the same destinations enjoyed by the able-bodied. Those would be in locations, both domestic and foreign, where they could mingle with the locals, learn about their traditions and histories, and try their foods.

When venturing away from their accommodation grounds, the physically challenged can always expect to find limitations as to what they can do and where they can go. For instance: accessing a beach, a mountain trail or jungle path. In towns, boarding many types of transport might be challenging or impossible. Public buildings with stairs, and high curbs on corners can also be problematic. While out and about, locating wheelchair accessible, family type bathrooms can be exasperating.

"Accessibility" means something a little different for each individual who has a physical challenge. All handicapped people can benefit from barrier free and accessible accommodations however. An ideal destination property would include sufficient ramping of entries to all buildings, wide doorways and halls, and handicap accessible family-type bathrooms in multiple areas. The sleeping quarters would have ample maneuvering space for a wheelchair to access the bed. It would include a large bathroom with a roll-in shower, a bar on the wall by the toilet. If the resort or other accommodation had a dining room, some wheelchair accessible tables would be welcome.

Desirable "extras" provided at dream vacation venues might be: A wheelchair accessible balcony or deck with a view, just off the bedroom. Also a central lounge or meeting room for visiting with other guests, wheelchair accessible paths or walkways outdoors throughout the property, a swimming pool that has a walk-in or roll-in deck, a paved terrace or patio surrounded by natural beauty, where one could enjoy morning coffee, a leisurely meal or an exciting novel.

Hidden away on pristine beaches, nestled by clear mountain streams, tucked into country villages, there may be ideal destination properties yet to be discovered. Where in the world are they?
