Any attorney can draft various contract/partnership/company agreements which can form legal relations between people of such comprehension that marriage itself pales in comparison. That this option has always been on the table and that homosexuals refuse to use it is a clarion call that it is not marriage that they desire, it is annoying straight people.
Few are honest enough to admit that a lot of the agitation of homosexuals about 'rights' is more psycho-drama than politics. More to offend the straight than to please the gay.
Marriage has always been a relationship male and female with a recognition of progeny and property. Every culture has a form of marriage, whether polygamy or polyandry, whether arranged or free. Until recently, no political entity recognised marriage as occurring between two people of the same sex. This is because the mere concept is intrinsically illogical.
Yet, homosexuals in the United States have decided to make Gay Marriage the centre of their lives.
The reason is not 'protection.' As mentioned in the first paragraph, basic Civil law has a cornucopia of methods by which people can enter binding legal agreements.
Hundreds of years ago there was the 'lady's companion' who would usually receive a generous gift at the death of the 'Lady'. There are partnership agreements which spell out to the last paper clip the division of property and the rights each enjoy. Forming a company has often been the method for more than two, (i.e. a polygamous relationship) where each party owns shares and has a say in the way the 'business' is run. Sexuality has no bearing on Contract Law; it isn't mentioned, it isn't even contemplated.
Further, divorce rates are extremely high, in some places, they stand at 51%, hence marriages do not seem to be working. So why should as volatile a community as the homosexual one, desire this form of monogamy?
One would have assumed members of the Gay community, seeing the problems of relationships, (gay and straight) would formulate their own contract, create their own ritual, and gain a legally binding connection better than marriage, and less traumatic to dissolve.
It is inescapable that homosexuals are so vociferous is not in support of their right to marry, but in pushing the straight community until it retaliates.
Most of us appreciate that if they received this 'right' tomorrow, they'd be arguing about the signs on lavatory doors or that high heels are called lady's shoes. No matter what rights homosexuals receive, they will still be homosexuals. Which is the root of the problem.
