I blame my older brother for my addiction to scary movies. As a child I looked up to him and wanted to do everything that he did. Most of the time he wanted nothing to with me, he was too cool to hang out with his kid sister. However, when it came to horror movies, we alway watched them together. A traditon that still lives on today.
Not every movie on my list is a horror movie, but they each had moments that scared me so badly that I have never forgotton them. Here, in no particular order, are my top ten scariest movie scenes ever.
#10 Pee Wee's Big Adventure (1985)
Here is an example of a non-scary movie that still managed to frighten me. The scene begins innocently enough. Pee Wee hitches a ride from a truck driver named Large Marge. As they are driving along in the dark, she tells him a story, in which she reveals that she is ghost. Suddenly her face transforms, Her jaw drops down, he skin wrinkles up and her eyes, which have grown substantial, pop out her head. Large Marge was a frequent visitor of my nightmares for a quitle awhile. For years I would close my eyes whenever that scene came on.
#9 Superman 3 (1983)
Again, not a scary movie, but there's a scene that terrified me as a child. In his plot to rule world, CEO Ross Webster along with his sister Vera build a super computer. Now back when this movie came out, super computers were very very large, taking up entire rooms. The super computer Webster built was the size of small building and resembled a power plant. Toward the end of the movie, the super computer almost kills superman, so Webster tries to destroy it with an axe. The computer malfunctions, he escapes but his sister is pulled in the main entrance. Electricty and metal wrap around her, turning her into a cyborg. For reasons I cannot explain that scene scared me to death. In fact years later when I had to get braces I was afraid that they would somehow turn me into a cyborg.
#8 Ju-On (2003)
Ju-On, a Japanse film, focuses on a social worker named Rika and a house that is cursed. The curse is brought on by the murder of a housewife, Kayako. At one point the ghost of Kayako comes crawling down the stairs. Her body is impossibly twisted and she movies freakishly slow. She sort of moans as well. The whole scene is very surreal and chilling.
#7 Poltergiest (1982)
Poltergiest is full of terrifying moments, but seeing this as kid who had a large tree outside her bedroom window, the tree scene was the most frightening of all. During an awful thunderstorm, a gnarled old tree comes through the window and grabs Robbie, the little boy. At the same time his sister, Carol Anne, is sucked through a wind tunnel, into the closet and into another dimension. Needless to say I was terrifed of my closet and the tree outside my window for quiet awhile.
#6 Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Nightmare on Elm Street is one of my all time favorite horror movies. All though it is rife with classic scary scenes, there is one that has always stayed with me. Nancy, the heroine of the film, falls asleep in class. While dreaming she see her best friend Tina, who was killed by Freddy, outside her classroom. Tina is in a bloody body bag, calling out to Nancy for help. She is eventually dragged down the hallway. That scene still gives me chills.
#5 House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
Otis B Driftwood, Mother Firefly, Baby, Tiny, Rufus, and Captain Spaulding make up the group of twisted killers in Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses. An unfortunate group of college students end up at the firefly household after they experience some car trouble. Each student is tortured and murdered by at least one memeber of the family. A few of the students, including one named Mary, are tied up together in the living room. Otis comes down the stairs wearing the face of Mary's father. He walks over to Mary and taunts her. Saything things like "Give Daddy some sugar" and kissing her, all while wearinig her father's face.
#4 Friday the 13th (1980)
Friday the 13th in another of my favorite horror movies. After her son drowns at Camp Crystal Lake in 1957 Mrs Vorhees kills two camp counselors. When the camp is re-opened Mrs. Vorhees returns. Of course, you don't know the killer is Mrs. Vorhees until the end of the film. Incidently it is at the end of the movie that, at least for me, the scariest scene occurs. Once Mrs. Vorhees is stopped, everyting appears safe and calm again. In the very last scene, a counsleor is rowing a boat out on the lake when a rotting zombie like Jason jumps out of the water and craps the counselor.
#3 Creepshow (1982)
Creepshow consisted of five short tales of horror. My favortie one being The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill. Jordy is bit of a back woods hick. He comes across a meteor rock and decides to sell it to the local college in hopes of getting some money. He ends up getting some of the liquid in the rock on his hands. The scene that always freaked me out was the very last one. Jordy has become infested by the meteor liquid, causing green weed like things to grow out of him. He props himself up, grabs his shotgun with his vine like hands and shots himself.
#2 The Sixth Sense (1999)
Coel Sear, an isolated child, sees dead people. Eventually he learns that he can communicate with them and help them. In once scene his is hiding from a ghost in a tent in his bedroom. His flashlight goes out and it becomes so cold you can see his breath. Seemingly out of nowhere a dead girl appears in front of him and vomits all over.
#1 The Eye (2002)
In The Eye, a twenty year old woman recieves an eye transplant and begins to see disturbing and gruesome images. Eventually she realises that these images are a fortelling of death. They always include a dark shadowy figure coming to take souls away. She travels to Thailand to try and find out more about the horrible visions. Toward the end of the movie she is sitting on a bus in a traffic jam. She looks out the window and sees hundreds of the dark shadowy figures walking around the street. She knows something horrible is about to happen. She tries to warn everyone, but nobody believes her. The cause of the traffic jam is an overturn tanker that is leaking gas. A man who had turned off his car, starts it back up , igniting the gas. The flames reach the tanker, causing it to explode. A chain reaction of explosions follow. In a eerily quite scene the dark figures then take the souls of the deceased away.
