The top ten scariest movie scenes ever

by Heather Smith

I blame my older brother for my addiction to scary movies. As a child I looked up to him and wanted to do everything that he did. Most of the time he wanted nothing to with me, he was too cool to hang out with his kid sister. However, when it came to horror movies, we alway watched them together. A traditon that still lives on today.

Not every movie on my list is a horror movie, but they each had moments that scared me so badly that I have never forgotton them. Here, in no particular order, are my top ten scariest movie scenes ever.

#10 Pee Wee's Big Adventure (1985)

Here is an example of a non-scary movie that still managed to frighten me. The scene begins innocently enough. Pee Wee hitches a ride from a truck driver named Large Marge. As they are driving along in the dark, she tells him a story, in which she reveals that she is ghost. Suddenly her face transforms, Her jaw drops down, he skin wrinkles up and her eyes, which have grown substantial, pop out her head. Large Marge was a frequent visitor of my nightmares for a quitle awhile. For years I would close my eyes whenever that scene came on.

#9 Superman 3 (1983)

Again, not a scary movie, but there's a scene that terrified me as a child. In his plot to rule world, CEO Ross Webster along with his sister Vera build a super computer. Now back when this movie came out, super computers were very very large, taking up entire rooms. The super computer Webster built was the size of small building and resembled a power plant. Toward the end of the movie, the super computer almost kills superman, so Webster tries to destroy it with an axe. The computer malfunctions, he escapes but his sister is pulled in the main entrance. Electricty and metal wrap around her, turning her into a cyborg. For reasons I cannot explain that scene scared me to death. In fact years later when I had to get braces I was afraid that they would somehow turn me into a cyborg.

#8 Ju-On (2003)

Ju-On, a Japanse film, focuses on a social worker named Rika and a house that is cursed. The curse is brought on by the murder of a housewife, Kayako. At one point the ghost of Kayako comes crawling down the stairs. Her body is impossibly twisted and she movies freakishly slow. She sort of moans as well. The whole scene is very surreal and chilling.

#7 Poltergiest (1982)

Poltergiest is full of terrifying moments, but seeing this as kid who had a large tree outside her bedroom window, the tree scene was the most frightening of all. During an awful thunderstorm,
