The use of instant replay in tennis

would be a replay of the point. Players will no longer go into an emotional turmoil when they suspect a bad call and is rebuffed by the umpire. They can take comfort in knowing the truth, even if the umpire's call was correct.

To prevent players from misusing the system, there are a few rules in place. Firstly, each player receives two opportunities to challenge calls in each set, which cannot be carried over to the next set. If they challenged and they were correct, they retain their two challenge opportunities. If they were wrong, on the other hand, the challenge is lost. During tie-breakers, each player receives an additional challenge. Players with no challenges remaining in the current set will be unable to challenge any further calls until the next set (or until the tie-breaker). In the final set of the match, the number of challenges each player receives is reset to 2 every 12 games until the completion of the match. Since the introduction of instant replay, players, umpires and spectators all have given favourable reviews, which is amazing for a recent change to such an old sport.

Currently, Hawk-Eye is only available in major tournaments such as the Grand Slams and even then, only available in the major stadiums. Certainly, there may still be some fine-tuning of the rules as both players and umpires become more adapted with the challenge system. However, with favourable results and a call for expanding the use of instant replay to encompass most if not all tournaments, Hawk-Eye appears to be a change that will stay.
