How to use NMHIC Mental Health Services Locator
NMHIC stands for "National Mental Health Information Center". This site is very "user friendly". When trying to locate resources in your area just follow these few easy steps.
Begin by going to http://mentalhealth.samhsa.gov to find the mental health services in your area.
You can access your state in one of two ways. You can either chose it by clicking on the drop down menu or you can click on your state.
Once you click on your state you come to the "State Mental Health Resources" menu where you will see the following choices. Following each choice you will see a description of each so that you can chose the type of service you are in need of.
Mental Health Facilities Locator: A searchable directory of mental health treatment facilities and support services. To better define you search you need to know what city/county it is your looking for services in. Also you can better define your search by choosing what type of setting you are in search of.
Mental Health Services Directory: A list of consumer, family, and advocacy organizations that provides comprehensive information about these mental health resources.
Hispanic Youth Violence Prevention Services: A searchable directory of Hispanic youth violence prevention services.
State Resource Guide: A summary of national and State organizations that provide professional advocacy protection, family support programs, financing information, and self-help groups.
State Suicide Prevention Programs: A list of available State-funded suicide prevention plans and programs.
Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Locator: A searchable directory of nationwide drug and alcohol treatment centers. Again, you have a place where you can chose which state you are looking for services at.
CMHS Grantees: Public and private organizations that receive funding from the Center for Mental Health Services to provide mental health services.
State Statistics: State-based data on the incidence of mental illness among children and adults, the utilization of inpatient services, and the amount of State spending on mental health.
Once you find what you're looking for there are many other links available.
Programs: You will find listings of activities and programs Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) pursues to assist in its mission to help States improve and increase the quality and range of treatment, rehabilitation, and support services for people with mental health problems, their families, and communities.
Mental Health Topics: There are three subcategories to choose from. Disaster/Trauma, Youth Violence Prevention, Children and Families. Once you click on one of these there are more specific categories to choose from.
Newsroom: You will find press announcements here that you can look at by Release Date or Title.
Publications: Here is a one-stop, national clearinghouse for free information about mental health, including publications, references, and referrals to local and national resources and organizations.
Resources: There's an enormous amount of resources on this site.
