Damiana is a common ingredient in herbal medicine for the treatment of several sexual dysfunctions. Found wild in the United States, Mexico, Central America, and Namibia, damiana is a large shrub that produces yellow flowers. The leaves of this botanical are generally the part used in herbal remedies.
Damiana contains compounds that stimulate blood flow, nerves, the metabolism, and the genitals of both men and women. The use of damiana can give a mild "high" that may last up to an hour after use. Women that use damiana report that it increases sexual urges and improves sexual stimulation. The effects of damiana on men are known to increase pleasure and help with erectile dysfunctions.
The use of damiana for sexual enhancement can be dated back to the early Mayans. A small study was conducted that reported damiana can aid with erectile dysfunction and allowed men increased frequency of erections. Damiana was also reported to increase the sex drive in women. This study has not been considered scientifically accurate to prove or disprove the claims of this herbs effectiveness.
Other uses for damiana include in the treatment of hot flashes and urinary infections. Damiana contains arbutin which converts to hydroquinone in the body which is known as a urinary purifier. Damiana can also aid with digestion, relieve constipation, clean the kidneys, and control bedwetting.
German herbalists commonly prescribe a tonic containing damiana in the treatments of depression and exhaustion. MAO inhibitors in damiana are known to be beneficial for those suffering with depression. However, there are no fact-based research studies that conclude damiana can treat this disorder.
Damiana needs to be used consistently for two to three weeks before the effects are detected. This herbal remedy can be purchased in pill form, as a tincture, or dried. The dried leaves can be smoked or used in herbal teas. Large doses of damiana can interact with prescription medications and the absorption of iron from foods. Lemon juice added to a tincture can counteract these interactions. Damiana can affect glucose levels and should be used with caution or avoided by those with diabetes.
Damiana is generally safe; the FDA has labeled this herb as GRAS (generally recognized as safe). This botanical contains minimal amounts of cyanide-like substances which can be dangerous in high doses. Most commonly reported side effect of damiana has been gastrointestinal upset. This herbal remedy should be avoided by children, pregnant women or those who are nursing, and individuals with liver or kidney disease. People that are taking prescribed medications or are under a doctor's care for other diseases and disorders should speak with their primary care physician before starting any herbal medicine treatment.
