What is friendship?

What is friendship? When I asked myself that question today, my mind immediately travelled to the world of yesterday's dream, where among the usual unrealistic but fantastic events of not so usual life, I remembered my best friend and the good times we shared... In my dream I remembered my best friend from primary school, the one with whom I went through all the excitement of school and meeting new friends and not doing homework and hanging out on the streets, going to my first concert and much much more. It breaks my heart to remember that I haven't seen her in more than 5 years now and have no idea when I'll see her again, that I've let her down in her most tragic day of her life, which I later regretted and remembered by drowning in tears. However, I'm glad to be reassured once again that she's still in my heart, in my memory and in my dreams.

What is a characteristic of good friend? Their ability to know all about you and understand you as you are, which of course applies to my best friend, whom, after years and years, I wasn't able to replace and probably won't ever be able to. The story of our friendship began in primary school and it blossomed through about 8 years. You'll say it might not seem like not much time to get to know each other, but we did. Apart from one big fight, which as I remember now lasted a couple of days, from Wednesday afternoon until Friday morning, we always helped each other and did make other friends, but all of the friends seemed to be common, with no hidden secrets with those so called "external" friends.

What is it like being in a real friendship? Well,... it's kinda like feeling like you belong all the time, no awkward silences and trying to hide your bad habits and imperfections, after all.. your best friend knows all about you. It was little things that were most memorable, like going up to each other's houses and spending time there doing homework but chatting more so than doing some work, like meeting up in the middle of the nine-story skyscraper house that we both lived in, hanging out on the streets and constantly talking about boys. It was the age for that after all. I can still remember those times, and they never really changed as I found out on my latest visit back to my home country, where after all the excitement of not seeing each other for years before, it just went down to the house again, sitting there talking as usual, her lovely smile, same face, but different hair-do. This is when I realised... that in years to come when I visit her again, it WILL be different.... BUT everything will still be the same, we will still be out hanging in cafes maybe, or talking in her house and remembering our childhood school-going, poem-writing, magazine-doing days!
