Buying gifts for a loved one who enjoys running can seem like a chore. It's all most of them think about: the next race, cutting down their time, eating right, the next race. This can be daunting for people trying to decide what to get as a perfect gift. So, in light of the universal dilemma of what to buy a runner, I offer this article and my 10 suggestions.
10. Running Shoes. As potentially one of the most expensive items on the list, running shoes can be the perfect gift. There are many things to consider when picking out the perfect pair of shoes, so this is probably an activity that you won't want to pursue alone. Offer to take your runner shopping to pick out the pair that best suits their needs. You may want to get an idea of the price range they're looking at before you head out as some pairs can cost several hundred dollars.
9. A GPS Tracking System. Another expensive buy, the GPS tracking system can help runners track progress in mileage, speed, average speed, location, and even heart rate. Most often in the form of a watch, these systems are basically little portable fitness systems.
8. A Heart Rate Monitor. Every serious runner should consider purchasing a hood heart rate monitor. These can cost up to 150 dollars for a decent unit and they come in types specialized for many different kinds of activities. Talk to a trustworthy salesperson or ask your runner which monitor would be best for them. As with all big purchases, make sure to research your purchase before jumping in.
7. Portable Water System. Depending on the type of running your runner is involved in, they may benefit from a portable water system such as a Camel Pack or high performance water bottle. Hydration is a big part of running and not all runners join races with water stands available throughout the track.
6. An iPod or MP3 Player. There is some controversy about whether runners should wear MP3 players while running in public. They have the benefit of helping the runner 'get in the zone' but can also distract from dangerous situations that may be unfolding around them - such as a change in traffic patterns, approaching emergency vehicles, or even the sudden emergence of a second set of footsteps echoing on the lonely running path.
5. Pepper Spray. It may sound quirky or overdramatic but many people, not just runners, underestimate the risk of venturing out alone in the early hours of the morning or during the hours before twilight. As some recent news headlines have shown, even a crowded
