There are many ways to re-arrange the words in the question "Living for today, but what about tomorrow?" in order to answer the question. For example one might say, "Live for today so that you have tomorrow" or "Live today for the tomorrow that you want," etc. etc. I have personally found a way to let the two co-exist in my life and have brought this advice to you today.
It takes looking no further than the title to find your answer. Many people are guilty of living in the past, others of living in the future- rarely do we find people "guilty" of living in the present. While many people have impulses to buy certain things, we often do not live in the moment. For those of us who have managed to do this it is at first worrisome to the future. Again though, I have the solution.
All of my life I was given trouble for living in the future. I did not find comfort in the past or the present and so I spent many of my days day-dreaming about how beautiful the future could be. I scribbled down a list of all of the things that I wanted to accomplish with my life; all of the things that I wanted to be and all of the things that I wanted to see. This was my inspiration for living for today.
When you spend a lot of time thinking about the future, you realise that you are wasting the now. You realise that the things on your list (even if it's just in your mind) are not being accomplished. When you spend time thinking of the future that's truly all you are doing- thinking. That's when I changed my philosophy in life. In order to live for both tomorrow and today, I created an even more detailed list of what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to get healthier, I wanted to help the world, I wanted to travel, etc. etc. and rather than just sitting around thinking about how I was going to do those things, I started working toward those things everyday.
Living for today does not necessarily mean giving up on what you want from tomorrow. Sometimes today is the door that has to open in order to get what you want from tomorrow. If you think about it literally, you write an article today in order to earn money on it later. If you had not first wrote the article, the future of earning from it would have never become a possibility. The past-the present-the future- these are all things that work together.
So what is my advice to you? Think about what you want from tomorrow and spend every day working toward achieving that goal. Spend everyday living the life that you want to live and accomplishing all of the goals that you want to accomplish and then you will find true happiness in all of your days.
