Marketing Major- Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte- Significant Scholarships- First of my friends excepted to school- Who would not be in heaven? Scared to finally be on my own, I ventured out into the real world: Charlotte, North Carolina. I had two older brothers who took the longer route to college. After an associates degree, Jon ended up being a tattoo artist. After a seven year endeavour, My brother Rob graduated with a degree in business from
Longwood University in Virginia. As I ventured out I was determined to complete my first college experience in the very sought after four year bachelors degree! Johnson and Wales University is a multi-location university. It has four locations in Providence, Miami, Denver, and the newest location Charlotte. My freshman year was the second year that the newest campus had been open. JWU is well known for their phenomenal culinary program. That is the biggest problem. I tell everyone I am going to a brand new campus as a marketing major. "Marketing? For restaurants right? That's great, every chef needs someone to help them promote their restaurant!" How annoying! This is what I went through on a daily basis, and am continuing to go through. I am in the end of my junior year, and honestly continue to encounter these questions on a weekly basis. I have tried hard to make a name for myself and for the business side of the University. I took a term off and I actually was a student recruiter for the entire state of South Carolina. I educated both teachers and students alike on the benefits and exciting things that our campus has to offer. A little background: Johnson and Wales started as a business school back in 1914. NO CULINARY. The culinary school has only been added in the last 30 years or so. I really took a chance as a marketing major, but I have also had a great time bringing that to people's attention and showing them how great of a school JWU is- for business and hospitality, not just cooking. I have been on the Collegiate Ambassador Team (CAT) and a very active member of the student government association. Being apart of these noteworthy and governing associations really maximized my college experience and helped to make significant changes in the university. I was the first student representative on the campus green committee, and have been able to help initiate green efforts throughout the entire campus! It has been an amazing experience and I would not take it back for the world. I encourage any one who is nervous about their college decisions to go for it. If you are unsure- do it. Do not brush off a new college or something just getting off the ground. There is so much room for growth and such a learning experience for both the faculty and you as a student.
