With the recent Swine Flu outbreak many people are wondering more about it. We're going to talk about how this particular type of influenza is spread, the symptoms, treatments and best ways to prevent the spread of it.

The swine influenza is a respiratory virus commonly found in pigs and is occasionally passed on to humans. Primarily the cases are restricted to persons working in close relation to swine and their quarters. The influenza is endemic in pigs meaning it is native to that specific species. Swine flu is spread like any other virus from one person sneezing or coughing then by having contact with another person. It can also be picked up by coming in direct contact with the virus then touching the nose or mouth.

The symptoms of swine flu are very similar to that of the seasonal flu virus. These include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills and fatigue. Some people have even reported cases of diarrhea and vomiting in association with this virus. More importantly, complications from this flu can sometimes lead to death.

Antiviral drugs are the best recommendation for this virus. If taken when symptoms first start these drugs have been known to make the symptoms milder and even lessen the time frame for the virus to run its full course. These drugs are available in pill, liquid and inhaler form. They enable your body's immune system to better fight against the virus. Antiviral drugs also lessen the chances of developing more serious complications from the virus, and this is extremely important for small children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems as they are more likely to develop other complications such as pneumonia.

It is important to know how to stop the spread of this virus. Like any virus hand washing and proper sanitation is key to slowing the virus from spreading. Coughing and sneezing are the two main causes of the spread of this virus. Keep disposable tissues on hand and throw them away after use. Washing hands and the use of liquid sanitizers are a good effective way to not spread the virus. Limit contact with nose and mouth as this is how it infects the body.

If you have flu like symptoms try to stay home from work or school. The virus is passable to other people for up to seven days after initial symptoms occur. Try to avoid contact with other people during illness. As with any other virus, when in doubt contact your doctor. They will be able to judge what type of virus it is and if treatment is required. Also look for complications from this illness and if needed seek immediate medical help. The key things to look for include shortness of breath, dizziness, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, pain or tightness in chest, confusion and unconsciousness.

If you think you may have contracted the virus or just to keep from getting it remember, proper sanitation practices. Stay hydrated and follow a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Limit your contact to surfaces that may be infected. The virus is manageable if we all pull together and do our part.
