One day in Florence will truly make you fall in love with Italy. Your whirlwind of a magical Italian experience will draw to a close with one thought repeating over and over in your head. When can I come back here and spend more time exploring?
If you see nothing else in Florence, do not miss Il Duomo. The massive red dome adorns most scenic photographs of Florence and it truly breathtaking to behold. The dome, begun in 1296 by Brunelleschi is truly an architectural marvel. As you meander around the square surrounding the enchanting structure you will appreciate the artistry that went into its construction. The combination of white, pink and green marble walls draw your gaze upwards to the red roof and truly holds a special place in the memories of anyone who has beheld it.
Climbing up inside the Duomo will give you a true appreciation of the architectural marvel that this building represents. Two domes were actually constructed, first a concrete one underneath, and then the red dome on top. The stairwell that is cut in between the two domes leads you up to the top of the structure. The climb is not for the faint of heart as a sense of vertigo overtakes some people as the carved steps bend up over the dome out of sight. Your reward is coming out on top of the dome succumbing to a view as gorgeous as none other. The small area on top of the dome is slippery marble but offers the adventurous a birds eye view of the entire city.
If the line to enter the Duomo is too long, a secondary vertical challenge awaits right next door at Giotto's Campinile. The line is often shorter to enter this bell tower perched right alongside the Duomo. The stairs and climb are easier and the height achieved almost matches that of the Duomo. The top of the bell tower is lined with wire for those a little wary of the heights, and your view is just as splendid.
After your climbing adventures and gorgeous views of the cities, a fine idea would be to visit one of the local cafes ringing the square surrounding the Duomo. The local pizza and deli style sandwiches have no equal and will fuel you to start your walking tour of the rest of the city.
The next logical stop in your city walk would be Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio. These areas are located not far from Il Duomo and the walk in between will give you ample shopping opportunities. The piazza has been Florence's political center since the middle ages. A COPY of Michelangelo's David is set out in the square for viewers to photograph
