Best ways to go green

Going green is an often heard topic these days. There are plenty of ways in which every individual can contribute to make this planet a greener one. From recycling, donating, reducing the dependence on energy resources, Online banking, buying hybrid cars to changing your home lights to compact florescent ones, there are plenty of ways to go green.

Here are some best ways in which you can go green:

Reduce your utility bills:

Avoid using laundry dryers: Dryers can increase your utility bills. It is one of those biggest energy consumer after refrigerator. So avoid using the dryers if climate seems suitable and use clothesline or bamboo poles to dry your clothes.

Turn off lights when not in use: Switch off lights and fans when not in use. You can reduce power consumption by 3-5% just by turning off unwanted lights.

Use energy saving appliances: Buy electric appliances with energy star label that consumes lesser energy. It helps to save 30% more energy than other standard brands. Unplug all electric appliances when it is not used. Avoid leaving electronic appliances in standby mode for long duration

Use compact fluorescent bulbs: Compact fluorescent bulbs consume far less energy than ordinary light bulbs. Also they tend to last longer compared to light bulbs.

Fix energy leaks: Fix all sorts of energy leaks through windows and doors. You can identify leaks by checking if cool air comes in when windows and doors are closed.

Control your thermostat: Do appropriate settings for thermostat during summer and winter. You can use an extra layer of clothing during winter instead of increasing the thermostat. A 68* may be just ideal during winter months. Turn down the thermostats while going outdoors.

Recycling: Recycling is a common way in which each of us can contribute to making our planet green. Batteries, plastic and other electronic items can be recycled. Dispose them in recycling bins instead of disposing them in ordinary bins. Old cell phones or watches can be returned to recycling centers for cash.

Donate: Clothing, electronics and similar household items can be donated to others if it is in good condition. Books, toys, clothing, electronics and all other household items can be donated to thrift shops or someone in need. Books can be donated to local libraries.

Reduce household waste: There are plenty of ways to reduce household wastes. You can carry your own shopping bags each time you head for shopping. Avoid using disposable cups and plates when possible at home. Carry your own containers when you buy carry out food from restaurants. Even bottled water can create waste each time you buy them. Carrying your own water bottle is another way to reduce bottles from reaching the landfill.

Going green is good for the environment and it is good for you economically. Find out ways in which you can contribute to make our planet greener!
