La Jolla, the "jewel" of San Diego, is a premier destination for tourists and locals alike. With its scenic beauty, Mediterranean atmosphere, and fabulous beaches, La Jolla has much to offer.

The first place to start in La Jolla is the beach. La Jolla has so many small beaches that it is difficult to name them all. From Torrey Pines State Beach, also known as Black's Beach, in the north all the way to Windansea Beach in the south, there is a beach in La Jolla for every type of beachgoer.

The best beach for a spending the day is La Jolla Shores. The relatively calm conditions also make it ideal for scuba diving and surfing. Surfing and swimming areas are separate, so there is little chance for a surfer to run into a swimmer. Black's Beach and Windansea Beach are better for more experienced surfers. Scuba diving is not recommended at either of these beaches. The best location for experienced scuba divers is La Jolla Cove due to its excellent visibility and large kelp beds. Also of note for divers is the Children's Pool, where the sea lions lounge, for its proximity to reefs offshore.

La Jolla has some of the most scenic views in the area. The cliffs at La Jolla Cove are stunning and picturesque. This beach is probably one of the most photographed beaches in California. The views in La Jolla are plentiful, just drive around the corner and there is another beautiful sight. The best location for breathtaking views is Mount Soledad. To see the houses on the road up the mountain, one wonders how they hang on to the side. Once at the top at Mount Soledad Park, the view is spectacular on clear days. One can see all of San Diego, even out to Catalina Island and the mountains near Los Angeles.

If shopping is on the agenda, La Jolla is the place to be. The shops in downtown La Jolla (just blocks away from La Jolla Cove) are reminiscent of Rodeo Drive, except the view is better here. There are a number of museums and art galleries for those looking for some culture. Fine dining is offered in almost any cuisine imaginable. Or for those with simpler tastes, there are excellent fish taco shops or burger joints.

La Jolla is also home to such world class institutions as Scripps Oceanographic Institute, Birch Aquarium, and University of California at San Diego. A number of biotechnology firms make La Jolla their home.

There are a wide variety of hotels and accommodations in La Jolla. First class hotels are available throughout the area, especially near the beach.

However, budget minded visitors can find motels near the beach, as well. Many cottages and apartments can be rented by the week, month, or entire summer. La Jolla has something for everyone. Come see the "jewel" by the sea.
