It opened in 1910 smack dab in the middle of the Oklahoma City stock yards. It was created to serve those who were doing business in the yards. Basically the place was filled with ranchers, cowboys and cattle haulers. These folks knew their meat and would settle for nothing but the best. That is how Cattleman's perfected their steaks.

In the early days they may have been a little on the shady side. During prohibition they were known for their specialty punches that were served in the late hours. Late hours were not something that was common in those days but Cattleman's had to be open when the men were finished working. That is when they made their money.

Cattlemen's has changed ownership a few times over the years, but the one that everyone still talks about took place in 1945. The Cattlemen was owned by Hank Fry, who probably gambled a little too much. Although the Cattleman's was doing well he seemed to be low on funds and into the gambling dream. It happened at a dice game. A rancher, Gene Wade, put up his life savings and Hank Fry put up Cattlemen's. If Gene Wade could throw a hard six then the Cattlmen's would be his. Mr. Wade put the brand of 33 on the wall of Cattlemen's as his symbol of good luck and fortune.

He then took some of that life savings and began to expand. One of the more interesting things was finer dining room that had murals of Gene and his family pushing cattle. It seemed fitting.

Notoriety grew and it became somewhat of a tourist attraction. The walls became decorated with genuine cowboys and cowgirls, actors and politicians. The famous or infamous were asked to sign the pictures. Maybe if the business goes south some day then can sell the photos off the walls.

Lets get down to business and talk about the food. I doubt a vegetarian would find much to eat. A salad would be about the only choice and even some of those contain meat.

The breakfast menu is typically cowboy. Steak and eggs, biscuits and gravy, and eggs are cooked anyway the customer wants them. Sausage,ham, bacon, and about anything but veggie burgers can be found during breakfast.

The steak is aged be a process that is a house secret. They claim that it can not be reproduced at home, but they won't give the details out, so the truth may never be known. Whatever they do it works. The steak in tender and tastes great.

The next thing that sets the Cattlmen's Steakhouse apart is probably their house specialities. Let's take a gander at the two they list. There is the Steak Soup and Lamb Fries. Both of them are delicious.

It is a come as you are kind of place. If a customer comes all duded up they are escorted to the fine dining area, if not they can sit with the ranch hands. The food is all the same and the serviceimpeccable.
