9) Keep your eye on the community boards at grocery stores, churches and work. People will often post items they are looking to sell and there are bargains to be found.

When purchasing, or re-purposing, used furniture take some precautions. Never take a used mattress from someone you do not know . Measure all items to be sure they will fit in your home. Most used items can not be returned and are sold "as is". Check for damage before you pay for an item. if you are buying a damaged item make sure it is something you can fix yourself and if not then factor repair costs into your purchasing decision. Plan on paying with cash whenever possible. This may allow for further discounts.

Furnishing your house on a budget can be an enjoyable, though challenging, adventure. Use your imagination, have a plan and a budget. Know your limitations. Don't take something for the sake of a bargain. It is not a bargain, if it then sits unused in your home. Most of all, have fun. Worse comes to worse, and you end up with an item that does not work in your home, you can always sell it at your own yard sale!
