Tips for motivating employees

Leaders will never motivate their employees if they do not understand people's needs and the importance of those needs. Leaders need to sit down and communicate with their employees in order to discover what motivates them. Find out what accomplishments the employees are most proud of. See if there is something that they would like to have the opportunity to do more often. Look at the components of the employees job and make sure there are areas that they like and enjoy doing. It really is pretty basic that employees want to do a good job. People always feel better when they do a good job and will feel discouraged when they do not.

The difference between a good leader and a great leader is the ability to recognize their importance in creating an environment that has enthusiasm and practices high standards in the organization they are working for. The key to creating this type of environment almost solely rests on the leader. Motivation will occur if the leader communicates effectively with their employees about maintaining high expectations, displays a positive attitude about their employees work and always make the employees feel valued for their hard work and achievements.

Feedback is a key motivator for employees. This is where the leader needs to visibly pay attention to their employees and provide them with specific and timely feedback and recognition. The words a leader uses can encourage or discourage employees to be successful and motivated. If a leader senses that an employees is feeling down or displaying low morale, the leader needs to take time and sit down and talk with the employee. Employees will appreciate concern and caring from the leader and especially that the leader took the time to help the employee.

Everyone makes mistakes and a leader should view mistakes as opportunities for improving and never berate their employees. Humiliating a employee is a quick path to destroying motivation.

If a leader has employees that are very talented but not living up to their potential, this is where the leader needs to acknowledge their skill and knowledge and identify any barriers to preventing them from reaching their potential. A little support that an employee has never received from other leaders in the past. is a open opportunity for the leader to jump start motivation.

Share stories with the employees about other talented staff that were able to achieve their goals and remained motivated. even when there were obstacles in the way. Employees that are willing to take some risks are motivated employees. If you have an employee that has experienced low morale, given expectations that they could not meet, find out what was the reason for killing their motivation. Address the issues that put up road blocks for them in the past and how the roadblocks can be removed so they can be motivated and successful.

A smart leader knows how to persuade employees to their point of view by focusing on what is important to the employee. Give examples to the employee how embracing your plan will meet their professional and personal needs. If your plan is not working to engage employees, there may need to be some modifications made to the plan so employees will stay engaged and motivated.

Celebrate the employees achievements and contributions. If an employee is doing an exceptional job, recognize them immediately. Be specific and emphasize the impact to the organization, this is a great motivator for any employee. Employees want to be recognized and feel pride in their accomplishments. Never take an employee for granted, praise and recognition are key motivators in any organization.
