Justifying the price of a good plumber

by Joe Brooks

Created on: April 27, 2009

Do you think that hiring a plumber is expensive? Consider the price of not hiring a plumber. Damage to structures, systems, and property may far exceed the price of the plumber. Of course, it is just fine to do it yourself, if you are qualified to do the work. But if you lack the knowledge or the equipment, the professional plumber may well be worth far more than the price charged.

One thing the plumber will have is experience. Knowledge and understanding may let the pro identify a problem as either simpler than you thought or worse than you thought. Either way you might save money by heeding the advice of a plumbing professional. Is your slow drain a clog, maybe something you could have dealt with yourself, or is it a serious system-wide problem? Your plumber will be able to make the determination and advise you as to the best way to fix it. How do you remove a clog that is beyond the reach of your hardware-store drain auger? Your plumber will know. Experience and knowledge give the trained professional the ability to deal with problems beyond the scope of the home handy-person.

Another point in the favor of hiring a professional is this; they will have the needed equipment. Do you have a video drain inspection system ready to use? Most likely not. Check your plumbing professionals' advertising or website. Many advertise video inspection. This modern technology can save you a bundle of cash by identifying problems beyond all doubt. Is the stoppage right there or further down the line? Is the problem a pipe failure or tree root intrusion? Inspection by video equipment will provide a sure diagnosis and prevent costly mistakes.

A qualified professional will have a good reputation and references. A plumber of good character and reputation will not overcharge you or charge for repairs that don't need to be done. If you need the services of a plumber, ask your friends and neighbors. They may be able to recommend a reliable professional. After you have done your homework and checked out the reputation of your contractor, you can proceed with confidence. Your plumber has his or her reputation on the line and their livelihood at state. A reputable individual will not be willing to risk a reputation built on years of good service. They will perform the work needed in a professional manner.

All together, it makes good sense to hire a qualified plumbing contractor when you have a plumbing problem. Look into the situation first; give it some thought after a close inspection. Then you will be able to make the decision; get out the pipe-wrench, or call in the plumber? Think about the experience, the knowledge, and the tools required, and you just might be ready call a professional to do the job.
