Writing is truly a craft. It combines a gift for the written word with certain techniques as well as your personal voice.
Like many other things in life, your writing will evolve over time. And your passion for it will have some ups and downs as well.
While there are no definitive rules to follow, this article provides guidance on how to become a more effective writer.
* Write more often.
One of the best things you can do is write frequently. All writers, no matter how gifted, have to work at their writing. It's just the really good ones who make it look easy.
Set some goals for yourself so that you will write more frequently. The only way you will get better at it is to practice at it.
Writing can be a labor of love, and there may be some days when you are not into it. That's normal, but you should still set some goals.
* Determine what works for you in terms of a schedule.
Creative types often shun a schedule, as they never know when they will be inspired to produce things. It is true that you may go through periods of time when you have far more to say than others.
But, you will do yourself a favor to set some kind of schedule. Determine when your writing is at its best. Is it first thing in the morning? Do you prefer writing in the middle of the night?
What works best for you in terms of location for writing? Do you prefer pen and paper, or using a computer?
All writers do better under certain conditions and circumstances. Get a feel for what those are for you, and then make the necessary accommodations.
* Read what others have written.
You can learn so much about writing by reading all kinds of things. Do not make the mistake of reading only one favored author. You will better find your voice my exploring all kinds of writing and by opening your mind to different kinds of information.
* Seek feedback.
Sharing your writing can be scary. It makes you vulnerable. What if others will not like it? Have you revealed something really personal through your writing? Do you feel confident about it?
While it is scary to get feedback, it is one of the best things you can do to improve your writing. Be sure to seek feedback from someone who you think will be willing and capable of providing quality feedback, though.
* Attend writing workshops.
There are probably numerous workshops available to you if you live in a city. Some towns are enclaves for writers and creative types as well.
Explore some of the writing workshops available to you, and try one out! If you cannot find something locally, then there are countless resources online.
Through a workshop, you will be able to build a network. These may be some of the folks who will be very helpful to you in your writing vocation.
