Writing is not an activity or skill which we can always simply turn on or off when we so desire, such as perhaps building a brick wall or a wooden fence. In order to write effectively, a writer has to both be in the right creative mood and free from any interruptions or distractions which may adversely affect their productivity. Given therefore that we know to expect them, we next have to determine how we are going to work through lulls in the writing process and the flowing of those creative juices.
We can approach this issue from two perspectives. We can consider what we may do to perhaps stimulate the creativity that we need to continue with our writing or we can consider what alternative activities we may pursue as we await the natural return of same.
If we have been sitting for some time, attempting to write our article, story, poem or whatever and we are getting nowhere fast, it may be simply that it is time to take a break. Perhaps we are tired, or perhaps we have simply been sat at our desk or PC too long and we have exhausted our creative powers for a time. What we should therefore do in this instance is go to bed, go for a walk, watch some TV, or do any one of a hundred other things which distracts our attention from our writing and allows our writing powers to be rested and refreshed.
What we may also wish to consider, however - in what is perhaps a more constructive sense - is to simply change the task which we are attempting to perform. If we are trying to write a Helium article, for instance, we could instead set it aside in the short term and perform some article ratings. This could be a way of not only focusing on other things to give us a very different type of break but also of perhaps generating some much needed improvement to our rating score. Alternatively, we could turn our attention from such as an article on gardening to one on creative writing and hope that the drastic change of subject will serve as the boost we require.
There are a great many ways in which we can work through lulls in the writing process but the most important factor is that we do not allow ourselves to become angry and/or frustrated. These are extremely negative emotions and will only serve to further disclude the likelihood of our writing skills returning to normal any time soon. We should always take deep breaths and make that change in our activity before either of these stages are reached.
