Muslim pre-wedding rituals

The Muslim wedding ceremony commonly known as Nikaah is marked with greatness. The rituals and marriage traditions are customary in Indo-Asian weddings. The wedding location can be the bride or grooms house. Nevertheless these days, may find it convenient and trendy to hold the wedding ceremony in the banquet hall. Below is listed the Muslim wedding program consisting of all the rituals: The Muslim pre wedding rituals consists of the Mehindi


ceremony wherein the bride hands and feet are decorated artistically with henna. The brides close relatives and friends are invited to celebrate the occasion which continues till the night with songs and dances performed by the guests.

In the Nikaah ceremony, a legal contract called the Nikaahnaama
is signed by the bride and the groom and important people. For the Nikaah, witnesses and religious counselors are invited from both parties bride and groom to celebrate the event. The ceremony also includes the family and friends of the bride and the grooms to share their blessing in the ceremony.

The Wedding Baraat is the where the actual wedding begins that involves a musical ceremony to announce the arrival of the groom. The married couple sits together during the Prayers and Aarsimashaf. The bride and grooms head are enclosed with a nuptial duputta and the prayers are recited. At the time of the ritual, a copy of the Quran is placed between the bride and groom and the bridal couple is only allowed to look at each other through mirrors.

The post Muslim wedding program consists of the Wedding Rukshati. Its the event wherein the Bride leaves the marriage place along with her husband. The wedding ceremony ends tearfully as the bride leaves her parents home to join her husband in her his house in a tradition known as Rukshat. The bride is welcomed into the grooms home by her mother in-law who holds the Quran over her head as she enters the doorstep. The last ritual is the wedding Valima where a reception is thrown by the grooms side to honor and welcome the bride into their family.

Legan Chir: When the date of marriage is finalized, cash present is sent to the bride`s father by the groom`s father. The ceremony is known as Legan Chir.

Day 1 and Day 2 Ceremonies: On days one and two, first the bride`s people and then the groom`s go to the other party`s house, carrying mehendi paste in a plate. The children carry candles, which are lit before entering the respective houses. Dinner is served and songs teasing both the boy and girl are sung.
