People have known the uses of herbs for centuries. Until recently, herb lore was believed to be the stuff of legends and wives' tales. With interest growing in the field of herbalism, people are realizing that herbs can be used to combat things as simple as the common cold. Modern science is now backing up what was once common knowledge.
Herbs are now being used with an alarming frequency. People have been going to stores like Wal-Mart and Costco in order to obtain herbal supplements. Many of those people do not monitor the results or contact physicians or herbalists in order to make sure that they are using the correct dosage or herbs.
A person who wants to know the full benefits of herbal supplements should always consult a doctor, herbalist or study the herbs thoroughly. However, even if you study the herbs and become a licensed herbalist, you should always get a second opinion. What you may think is happening could be a symptom of something much worse.
If you are getting a prescribed herbal dosage, it is always a good idea to research what herbs you will be using. Some may have unforeseen side effects, just like regular medications. Sadly, doctors and herbalists may not think about informing you of all the consequences of using such herbs.
Some herbs, which have similar properties, may be used to replace others. Echinacea and Myrrh have similar attributes and can be interchanged. One of the reasons that you would be interested in researching alternative herbs would be the expense of the one prescribed. Be sure to check with your doctor or herbalist before using the alternative herb.
There are herbs, which can be used in first aid. Many herbalists promote having an herbal first aid kit. Again seek guidance before creating a kit for yourself. Having fresh plantain leaves in your kit is a wonderful aid when wishing to sooth bee stings. Crush the leaves and apply directly to the wound.
Some herbs can be used in culinary efforts to not only improve the taste of an existing dish but also to promote health. Culinary herbs such as rosemary, basil, thyme and oregano have healing properties of their own. Eating rosemary often can help promote relaxation in the muscles used in digestion as well as helping relieve the pain in menstrual cramps.
Herbs can also be used in aroma-therapy. Scents have been connected to both memories and feelings for decades. As an example, Real estate agents used to commonly have the home-owners bake bread on days that they were showing the home. The reason for this is that the smell of the bread would remind people of home. This method has been proven to increase sales of homes. Scents of lemon, lime, and lavender remind many people of Spring. Just as the scents of cinnamon, sage, and pine trees remind people of the Yule and Christmas.
In the end, herbal supplements can be used in a variety of ways for many health benefits. Scents, food and even pills can help prevent heart problems, common colds, etc. However, by misusing any treatment you can risk your life. Remember to always consult a herbalist or a doctor before using any type of "medicine".
