The Kentucky Derby is one of the most famous horse races in the world. This two-minute event takes place each spring in Louisville, Kentucky, at Churchill Downs. Thousands gather to watch the Derby "live," while millions watch on television.
For the residents of Louisville, the Derby is their pride and joy. So years ago, those in the community decided to spread the Derby out beyond race day, and created the Kentucky Derby Festival. And, they clearly outdid themselves with this amazing and fun festival!
* What is the Kentucky Derby Festival?
This spring festival is not like your typical weekend gathering. Instead, it is spread out over a few weeks, and features events ranging from a marathon to a parade to bluegrass concerts to balls.
It's almost like the entire community gathers to celebrate the coming Derby. What a great spirit of camaraderie and local pride, and it is shared with thousands of visitors!
Started in 1956, this event has grown through the years, and now features over 70 events. The dates of the 2009 festival are April 17-May 2. The final date marks the 135th running of the Derby.
* What are some of the most popular events?
There are so many incredible things to choose from for this festival. It's just amazing how much effort is put into bringing together all of these events, and the hard work shows.
If you are planning to spend some time at the Derby Festival, you can get a detailed schedule of events at the official festival website: www.kdf.org. But, this article will highlight a few of the most famous events.
* Derby Fillies Ball
This formal event marks the real beginning of the festival each year. It is at this ball that the Derby Festival Queen is crowned.
The ball is quite a spectacle, and it is attended by Louisville society members as well as by local politicians. Talk about a party! You will find it here, in a culture known for old money and hospitality.
* Derby Festival Marathon
Held on the Saturday before the Derby, this race shows that horses are not the only ones who have been training! For those who are not quite up for a full marathon, a mini-marathon is also held.
The race is well attended, with over 10,000 participants. And for those who prefer to watch, it is free to stand by and cheer on the runners. This marathon is a great way for people to get their adrenaline going, as if the excitement in the air were not already ramped up enough!
* Run for the Rose
This event is sure to entertain you and your family. It entails various restaurant servers from the area competing in an obstacle course, while carrying trays of drinks and food! Your children will adore this event, and it's bound to provide laughs for all.
* Republic Bank Pegasus Parade
This parade, which is the oldest event of the Derby Festival, is something that must not be missed. It attracts a quarter million people each year, and is filled with incredible sights and sounds.
One of the highlights of the event is various thoroughbred horses, but it also features celebrities, floats and other exciting things. Each year, the parade has a theme, and this great event truly captures the spirit of the Derby Festival.
If you are interested in attending this great festival, you will not be disappointed. This experience is one that you will want to attend again and again, and with good reason.
