Regardless of what the wedding industry would have you believe, you can have a memorable wedding for a lot less than $20,000. Don't succumb to the fantasy that you must have the picture perfect wedding with all the bells no matter what the cost. You can have a beautiful wedding and stick to your wedding budget.
As a couple, decide what is of highest value to you. Put them first on your budget sheet. Then add the other events and items that you would like in descending order, according to value. Set up a time-line to spread the expenses over the months before the wedding. Determine your budget that includes a cushion for unexpected expenses.
Tap your available man-power. That includes all of your relatives and friends. You can save tons of money if they can cater, bake your cake, customize your invitations or help you alter your clothing. Talented friends can take pictures, entertain for the reception or become your wedding coordinator.
Choose your date carefully. Off-season months, from October to January and March, are not as popular. Weekdays are also not as popular. Because the availability is greater, it is easier to get a reduced price during these months and days.
While considering dates, also consider the time of the wedding. The reception gets more expensive as the day goes on. A morning wedding reception could be a brunch; an afternoon reception could just include desserts. Choose the time of the day that will compliment your choice of menu. Does it have to be a sit-down, three course meal? Choose an evening wedding. If you need to cut corners on spending, a simple buffet-style meal can be created at a much lower cost and will work with for evening or night. Have friends join you to create and freeze the food yourself. Finger foods are perfect for an afternoon wedding.
Many wedding boutiques offer last year's dress for less. Check if they have a bridal show coming up. By being willing to model a dress, you may get a discount or other item of value. One bride earned her beautiful veil by modeling in the boutique's fashion show. Check online for wedding dresses too. BridePower.com is one site that offers designer dresses for 50-70% off. Don't overlook possibilities on eBay but buy early so you have no last minute mishaps.
With a glue gun and silk, you will be amazed at ways you can keep your budget under control. You can decorate wine glasses with beads and make a special pair for the bride and groom. Use pictures of the couple as children and then as
