God is the Father, pure and simple.
He is the creator, progenitor, conceiver, divine. He is breath, eternal, unchanging, sublime. He is fire, light, the source and the culmination of all our plans, our beginning and our end. He is love. He is patience. He is kindness and joy. He is our birth and our death. He will hold us in eternity in the palm of His hand. He instructs us, guides us, informs us. We have been knitted together by Him. He knows our destiny, our failings, our dreams. He abhors our self reliance, our pride, our vaulting ambitions. He scorns our efforts to re-design the world in our image. He scoffs at our attempts at diplomacy, our powerlessness, our disagreements and petty squabbles. He is jealous of our idols. He is frustrated by our ignorance. He laughs at our misadventures. He waits longingly, patiently, for the return of his prodigal sons.
He sends us into the wilderness of our own confusions, and listens for the sound of the penny dropping, the spirit lifting, the murmur of our prayers. Without the promptings of His Holy Spirit there would be no comfort, no wisdom, no peace. Our most supreme artistic accomplishment is just a tiny pearl drop from the treasure-house of His palace.
He sent us a son to die for us. He wants to save us. He loves us for our weaknesses and admires our determination to succeed. He is touched by our remembrance of him, our worship, out exaltation at the mention of His name. He needs our praise, our thanks, our adulation. He thrives on our love. We thrive in His light, flourish in the glow of His grace. We are forgiven by Him.
Sometimes He leaves us alone and watches us stumble. He waits with a severe brow to see us restored. He frowns at our transgressions, nods at our impulses, our rash actions. He despairs at our addictions, our self-punishments, our stubborn antagonisms and futile adventures. He will wait forty years for us to go round the same mountain until we realise that the very thing we were looking for... is right under our nose.
He gets excited by us, he thrills at our endeavours that achieve above and beyond his expectations of us. When things go right, when things go just the way He planned them, He throws a party. Everybody in Heaven is invited and they sing and dance.
He looks forward to that moment at some time in the future, when all understanding becomes one, when His Son unites us and leads us to the final promise. Like all Fathers, He waits breathless for our return.
