To ask if the Bible is trustworthy is to deny those religions who base their religion on faith. By faith alone some of those ministers say, we are saved. To deny that Jesus Christ has ordained His word to be spread to the masses by His disciples through His book is to deny that we can be saved by faith alone. If we deny that we can be saved by faith alone then we must look to works as a means of being saved. If we are saved only by works then we must work to determine the historical basis of the New Testament.
I could work to find historians who have done the research for me and on whose scholarly work we depend, but I would rather start with what I know as common knowledge. And by common, which is a legal term as for example, common law marriage, we know that the Bible or the King James's version used by all Protestant sects in one form or another including the liberally translated Good News version used by what are euphemistically called born again sects was translated by a monk when England was captured by the Romans. The book was translated in order to lead the pagan Celts to better understand Roman Christianity. The spread of Christianity in the British Isles following the laboriously transcripted text into the Anglo/Germanic tongue using Roman letters paved the road for the word of Jesus Christ to be spread to the pagans not only of England but of their cousins living in Germany. We have to assume that if we are working on being saved by good works and not by faith alone as Emmanuel Kant would espouse, that the venerable monk who transcribed the Greek text into English was steeped in the knowledge of the history of the New Testament as well as in the Old Testament.
Both books had authors who had known of the works that they were reporting, for both books are reports of the events happening in their lifetime or in the stories told by first person accounts in their lifetime. Similar histories like The Odyssey by Homer are reports by authors of events that occurred. Historians are only as reliable as their sources. If the venerable Bede was a historian, of course he was, and if we can verify his having lived at the time that we are to assume he translated the Bible, then we can begin there and work backwards.
We would have to return to Rome and to the Emperors, whose modern day vestige is the pope. We would have to work to find his basis as being the only true voice of God on earth and therefore his hold on Christianity as being always right, or absolute in knowing the will of God and the human mouthpiece of the fused divinity we worship as The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost, or Christianity. How trustworthy is the pope? For he is in line to basing his religion on The Bible. If we find that he possess information that predate the birth of Jesus Christ in written papyrus or dead sea scrolls, then we can go forward in our search for the truth and for the trustworthiness of the Bible.
Since I have gone that far back, I have decided to do some more research because I do base my faith on works alone.
