With the economy in a recession, you are likely scrutinizing your budget and looking for ways to save. With thousands of people losing their jobs weekly, it is important to cut back where you can and to build a strong safety net.
For those who have been unfortunate enough to lose their jobs, saving money is critical. There are many ways to save, such as eating out less often, using coupons, cutting out the pedicures and shopping at discount retailers.
But what about ways to save when it comes to entertainment? Have you considered getting rid of your television? While you may consider this a really bad idea, it is one that can lead to savings.
Below are a few ideas as to how to save money by getting rid of the television.
* No more cable bills
The most obvious saving is when it comes to cable bills. For many families, monthly cable runs $100 or more. It is amazing how quickly this service can add up, as there are often taxes and other fees you do not anticipate.
Many consider cable a necessity, but it is not. It is expensive, and an easy way to cut out some of your monthly spending. You may find it unfathomable to live without it, but you can adjust.
After all, you can watch news clips and keep up with headlines on your computer. And, you can watch many television programs on your computer as well.
* Less spending on DVD rentals
Millions of people have monthly movie subscriptions through Blockbuster or Netflix. You can cut out this spend by getting rid of your television. Of course, you can still watch DVDs on your computer, but perhaps you will limit that to ones you already own.
* Fewer temptations
If you still watch commercials on television, you may find all kinds of new things you want. Just think about the booming "As Seen on TV" commercials. Did anyone really need a Snuggie? Yet that profit has been hugely profitable.
By limiting your television watching, you will also limit your exposure to advertising. As a result, you may find it easier to stop spending money on certain fun-to-have items that you do not really need. Out of sight, out of mind.
* One less distraction
The television can provide great entertainment, but your favorite shows can also be a distraction. Such distractions can keep you from taking care of things you need to be mindful of, such as your budget.
By eliminating the television, you can use some of your free time to stay on top of planning and taking care of personal business. You can use some of your time to find out other strategies for saving, or ways to invest your retirement funds.
* No need for all of the television gadgets and games
Have you ever noticed how many video games and other products are out there that are compatible with your television? There are so many things you can purchase to go along with your television.
By getting rid of your television, you will no longer need to pay for that recording device you rely on so often. You will no longer have to keep up with all of the video games. You can actually get off your sofa and get out there and experience some real-life adventures.
* Proceeds from your television
Finally, you may be able to make some money by selling your television. You will certainly have to sell it for far less than you bought it, but you can still perhaps get a bit of money to add to your savings.
