The biggest wedding splurges

A wedding is one big splurge in itself, but given that the majority of us don't have celebrity budgets, we have to make choices between where to splurge and where to save. This is a very personal decision, but in general it's best to spend on the things that are the most noticeable, or will contribute to lasting memories.

Some of the most important things to consider splurging on include:

Photography

A wedding is over in one day, but it's the photographs that help keep the memories alive for decades to come. Ask yourself what you want to have to look back on? What you'd like to be able to show your children and grandchildren? Many couples have ended up renewing their vows primarily because they weren't happy with their original wedding album.

The dress

The wedding dress is important on several levels. Firstly, it may be something that the bride has been dreaming about for many years. Secondly, the bride is the center of attention on her wedding day and therefore a lot of focus is directed her way. It is important that she feels confident and beautiful.

The reception

The average reception accounts for around 50% of the wedding budget. Therefore, it definitely qualifies as a splurge. Think about what style of reception you'd like to have and examine how many people you'd like to invite. If you work out what the most important aspects are, you can make sure you have what you want and still stick to a budget. For example, if you want a very elegant reception that will cost over $150 a head, then you should keep your guest list tight. In reverse, if having lots of guests is more important, perhaps you could have a more affordable buffet style reception.

The rings

Your wedding ring is the one piece of jewelry that you should wear for the rest of your life. Therefore, it is vitally important that it is both a quality piece and something you love. Select a band made from gold or platinum and really consider whether it will stand the test of time. You don't want to buy something that's currently fashionable, only to find yourself detesting the style two years down the track. You might also like to have them inscribed with something that is sentimental to you.

The honeymoon

A comment that many newlywed couples make is that the wedding day itself simply flies by. A honeymoon is a great way to connect and really reflect on the whole experience, helping solidify its importance. If you were to rush straight back to work two days later, it could be quite a letdown.

Anything else that's really important to you

If there has been something you have always visualized for your wedding day you should try to incorporate it, at least on a realistic level, for example maybe you always wanted to arrive in a vintage car, or perhaps you always imagined a string quartet playing in the background.

You can save on the things that are less noticeable, or do not contribute to lasting memories. Like favors, place cards, confetti, menswear suit hire and all the other little details or aspects that aren't as integral to you.
