"Music soothes the savage beast." We've all heard this cliche', yet we seldom heed our own advice. In our daily struggles, we forget to simply relax. And just listen.
So, here are some tips to help you wind down:
1. Assess your mood. If you're a person who loves to drive fast with the windows rolled down, stereo blasting Akon's latest jam, beware; although this may feel like stress relief, loud music often contributes to un-soothing the savage beast. Like any therapy, music will not work unless you choose your selections wisely. It's like eating a McDonald's cheeseburger and fries; just because a song sounds good, doesn't mean it's good for you. Slowing down your speed and music can save your life.
2. Explore different kinds of music; many artists like Dido and Jewel can offer an alternative to the classics like Bach and Chopin. Talking with relatives and friends can also provide an opportunity for new music experience and good conversation. If the music you listen to doesn't calm your nerves (like listening to Metallica after arguing with a girlfriend), it's time to change pace to find peace.
3. Do your homework. Many stores allow you to listen before you buy. In addition, online music sites like Myspace.com, Youtube.com and MTV.com allow you to sample artists. If you like what you hear, you can purchase the song. Cable and satellite companies now offer commercial free music for a small fee and usually include music stations with your television package. Surf and see; you may find something new that you would never have considered; like music that will allow both your body and mind a little quiet time. Artists like Loreena McKennit, Enya and Yanni are excellent for starters...keep an open mind, and it will be a more peaceful one.
4. Make sure that you keep your music handy in your car, your PC, and anywhere you might need it. Try to find radio stations that may play the same type of music, so you can tune in when necessary. For the PC, Pandora is an excellent way of listening to your favorite music; commercial free, anytime and anywhere. This download provides custom designed radio stations according to your preferences, by simply typing in the name of your favorite artist. The site then compiles all of the music in that genre and plays continuously; relieving you of the hassle of CD's, commercials, etc. Don't like the song? Simply skip it.
5. Make sure the music doesn't provoke depression. A lot of songs can trigger memories of passed loved ones, past relationships or difficult times in your life. Music is a natural mood enhancer, but like other therapies, can have adverse effects if not used properly. Don't listen to a song that makes you feel badly; simply turn it off and find something more relaxing.
Remember, finding inner peace through music can lower blood pressure, ease stress and enhance the quality of your life. Music is therapy for everyone, everyday. So take a breather, light a candle and relax to the soothing sounds of a classical masterpiece; it will cost you far less than your funeral, where your favorites will only be enjoyed by your guests. Resting now can prevent you from having an arrest, and you'll at least be around to enjoy it.
