Bradd Pitt in a debate between God (or the force of light, Hopkins) and the devil (or the force of darkness, Pitt) that is marvelously modern and macabre.
5. Vanilla Sky (mid to late 90s-Starring Tom Cruise and ?) I see this as one of Cruise's two (2) best roles in that he is a complex character challenged to transcend the superficial into the supernatural after experiencing a physical tragedy that forces him to examine all of his true motives and acts and to come to terms with both the very best and the very worst of them. Cruise's leading lady girlfriend gives a riveting portrayal of what it is like to love deeply and be discarded mercilessly in the throes of Cruise's identity crisis.
6. Eyes Wide Shut-(Starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman)-As esoteric as the above-mentioned Vanilla Sky, this movie marvel tackles matters of life and heart. Is cheating in a relationship the catalyst for that relationship's caustic destruction or can a couple of character make a comeback and create deeper devotion and meaning in their relationship. EWS is flagrantly philosophical and thought provoking and is not recommended for view unless an intellectual debate is desired once the curtain is drawn.
7. Pacific Heights-(Starring Michael Keaton) This simplistic and yet realistic and relatable cinematic scare is that of a house of horrors that comes complete with a less-than-desirable landlord. An enterprising and enthusiastic young couple enter into a mortgage that is more than anyone could bear and have to figure out how to come out financially and emotionally intact on the other side.
8. Breakdown-(Starring Kurt Russell and ?) "If a tree fell in the forest, would anyone be there to hear it fall?" Russell sure was. In fact he was so far out in the middle of nowhere that both his car and his temper overheated when his wife is kidnapped by a raucous rodeo of Rednecks and a ransom becomes required. Shot in the barren California or Nevada dessert, this barely known about "B" movie is still bursting at the seams with passion and drama.
9. Panic Room-This movie gives new meaning to the expression "going green" as to the observant eye the whole movie appears to have this at times very distracting and at times very effective "green tint to it. It is the story again of a bad building creating a bad mood. The movie's main characters become lured into the building's basement and their successful exit depends not only on how calmly they bare with their situation, but how willing they are to follow orders.
10. Spy Game-(Starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt)-A masterful musical score makes this CIA movie cinematically sensational. Redford is an old hat in the CIA recruited to drag Pitt into his "prearranged" destructive plots. What results is a hearty heart pounding chase to someone else's finish line. But if Redford and Pitt can't learn to pal up and "play nice," what ensues might actually be their finale instead.
