There is no country on earth that has managed to gain a reputation for fun like my country, Ireland - and we even have our own word for it!
The Irish for fun is craic (pronounced "crack") and a popular way of wishing someone a good time is to wish them "Ceoil Caint agus Craic" - music, conversation and fun. In traditional Irish society the three are inextricably linked; centuries of fun seeking have revolved around good music, impromptu singing sessions and dancing, passionate discussions and storytelling, and of course, the elusive craic. It's that feeling you get, when at the end of a good day or night, you've heard something interesting, done something different and talked to someone new. And it comes in all shapes and sizes in Ireland.
Modern Ireland is no longer the land of thatched cottages and blackthorn sticks; but it still boasts more than its fair share of fun. How to make the most of it is a good question - but the secret lies in tasting a little of everything that's on offer. There is so much to enjoy, from culture to music and getting to see all of it in a visit can be difficult. One of the best tips is to find out in advance what is on near you, and cherry pick the best. Balance immersing yourself in the culture and history with getting out and about for a pint and a good Irish traditional music session. Most cities like Cork and Dublin have both traditional and contemporary theatre on offer; likewise there are both great Irish traditional musicians and contemporary bands. Try to come away from your visit having sampled not only the past but the present.
And go with the flow. The Irish are not as cute and charming as we are portrayed nor is life as laid back as people think. However we do retain our rather eccentric attitude to timing socially, and we like to make plans in order to break them. The standard of living is high and can be expensive, but balance this out with free activities, enjoying the scenery of the Burren or walking on Inch strand or strolling through St Stephen's Green. And talk to us - we really are still friendly.
To begin our virtual "Cookes Tour" of what's on offer, no visit can possibly be contemplated without exploring Dublin, the capital city and my home town. Dublin as a settlement was founded by the Vikings circa 988; they took over an existing native settlement called Eblana and strengthened it into a port. It has been the centre of many historic events, and it's architecture reflects both British Rule (Dublin Castle, Georgian
