The life of a child can certainly be a busy one. School, extracurricular commitments, play dates, family time, and the like, keep children in the midst of a whirlwind of activity almost every day. Unfortunately, many children experience a great deal of stress and tension as a result. Of course, children do benefit greatly from being involved in activities such as sports, dance, music, and others. However, all children require periods throughout the day in which to rest and relax. Furthermore, children are often exposed to a large amount of noise from sources such as television, video games, and the other electronic gadgetry that is so prevalent today. An excessive amount of sensory over-stimulation can be agitating and cause children to become anxious, cranky, or upset. Therefore, it is essential to the happiness and overall well-being of a child of any age for parents to schedule quiet time during the course of a day. It is an opportunity to ease tension from their stress and strain, and it is helpful in promoting rest, relaxation, and renewal.
The following are just a few of the many activities parents can incorporate into their child's daily routine to encourage quiet time.
-Reading
Reading is a wonderful activity in which a child can relax in a quiet environment and simply enjoy a good book. Reading can also serve as an entertaining and educational escape from the pressures of their schedules.
-Arts and Crafts
Coloring, painting, and drawing are only a few of the many arts and crafts activities that a child can indulge in. Engaging in arts and crafts enables a child to be creative and calm at the same time.
-Quiet play
Quiet play activities such as board and card games, puzzles, building blocks, and the like, allow children to share quiet time with parents or friends, without the influence of electronic toys.
-Outdoor activities
The great outdoors offers a child the chance to take a relaxing walk, take photographs, pick flowers, spend time in a tree house, or simply enjoy the calming powers of fresh air and nature.
It is extremely important for adults to remember that being a child can be busy and hard work. Part of the joy of childhood is being involved in a number of experiences and activities that result in growth, education, and a well-rounded child. However, moments in which they can enjoy quiet and peace are equally important in providing them with the much needed relaxation they deserve.
