Believe it or not, scoring in the game ping pong is not entirely what is seems. It can be an immense difficulty for the umpire to call the decisions, even if he stands in a close position to the board. However, making use of these tips will improve you methodically as an umpire and will help you enjoy the game without being abused for making incorrect decisions.
The game commences predominantly with a warm-up session. This allows the players to focus and concentrate; not to mention exercise their muscles a little before getting into some intense sporting. It can really distract the players if you repeatedly ask them questions, so this would not be preferable (most people like to concentrate in warm-ups.) Eventually, a player will acquire focus and hit ralleys of ten shots or greater. This would be the time to ask them if they're ready to play.
Grasp that pen, coin and paper and get ready to score! Ask your opponent whether they would like heads or tails. Flip the coin and the winner shall choose whether they want to serve or receive the ping pong ball.
The score begins at 0 for the two players. Each time a player wins a ralley, one point shall be acquired under their name. It is recommended you talley the score, as it is the easiest method to use. Each player serves for two points in a row, with no exceptions allowed. The ball must collide with one's racket and then hit your side of the court before passing the net into the opposing player's side to be called a serve. It may not go off the ping pong table, or an automatic loss of the point will be given.
In the event of the ping pong ball hitting the net before making the other side of the table, no one will accumulate a point and it will be replayed. This is commonly known as a let. There is no limit towards the amount of lets you can serve in a row, but traditionally, if you serve three continuous lets, you would offer a drink. You are allowed only one serve per point. If you do not make your serve over following the above instructions, you will lose the point.
In the ralley, shots that are hit must not get hit on the full. In addition to this, they must pass the net without bouncing first and must hit your opponent's side of the court. Hitting it out is strictly classified as out and you will lose the point. Shots that hit the top of the net before passing the net will be referred as normal shots, and the ralley will resume. If the ball collides with the roof, it is your decision as to whether you'll play it on or not. Most people classify it as out.
The first player to accumulate a total of eleven points will be declared the winner of the set. However, you must acquire eleven points while being ahead of your opponent by two. For example, you can not win 11-10. You would instead have to win so you pass your opponent by two; an example is winning a set 12-10. However, if you win 11-9, or 11-8, for example, you would automatically win that set because you would be ahead of your opponent by two.
As described earlier, you will win a set if you gain eleven points. There are usually five or seven sets in a match, depending on what the players agree on or the rules that apply. However, when playing in a non-competitive manner, you are allowed to play as many sets as intended.
It is horrendous to not shake the opposition's hand after the match has finished, regardless of whether you win or lose. It portrays a lack or reverence and respect if you do not.
All in all, have fun scoring your match! Being able to score makes the experience just that one bit more pleasurable.
