Depending on your idea of what the "best" video game is, there are obviously very many to choose from. I will provide insight on a few games that I have played, as well as pros and cons about them. The games I will discuss will be Starcraft, Counter-Strike, and World of Warcraft.
Starcraft is a game made by the company Blizzard. It can be played either single, or multi-player, and can be a lot of fun. The goal behind the game is to mine minerals and gas, and with those elements you must build up an "army" to defeat either the computer or other players. The game is fun because each "game" can last anywhere from 5 minutes to 1-2 hours depending on the play style of you and your opponents. Overall, Starcraft provided me with a few years of fun, and even after not playing the game for 5 years I go back and play it for a few weeks now and then. The downside is that SC has lost much of its player base over the last few years.
Counter-Strike is a modification of the best selling game called Half-Life. Counter-Strike is a first person shooter game and people are getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to play this game. They are sponsored and play in matches worldwide each year. For the more casual gamer, though, "CS" provides a lot of fun as you get to buy whatever gun you want, and attempt to do missions such as rescuing hostages, or planting a bomb in a bomb zone. The range of skill in this game is immense, but there are people buying the game every day to play with friends, or meet other CS players on-line. The downside is that if you are a beginner, and you play against seasoned CS players, you will find it very difficult to succeed.
World of Warcraft is by far the best selling MMORPG to date. With over 6 million members worldwide, WoW provides an extremely large server base to support all gamers. Whether you are interested in player versus environment (PvE) or player versus player (PvP) combat, WoW incorporates it all. With the new expansion the level cap was raised to 70, and the implementation of arenas are viewed as a tremendous idea to any PvPer. The downside is that WoW requires a monthly fee to play, but the game is extremely fun to play.
There are many other games in which I have played, but these are some games that are still popular today, and provide cheap, safe entertainment!
