I do not think that The Dark Knight would have been as popular if Heath Ledger hadn't died. I know that the new Batman series has its own little cult, but it wouldn't have hit such a big audience on its own. I am a fan of the original Batman, and had Heath not been in it in the first place, I wouldn't have even seen it. Since he died, everyone wanted to pay homage to him and so, they went to see his last performance ever. He touched a lot of people though his movies. He had a huge following. I don't think that the new Batman series is good enough for the large following that it had when Heath died. It is sad that it takes the death of someone that you admire to see a movie, or buy a CD or book. Its at that moment we realize that the artist had talent and their work becomes legacy.
Honestly, would a lot of the stars who have died though out the years be as famous as they are now had they survived? Especially the stars who died controversially...like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Sharon Tate. It is also a tragedy when someone young who has barely began to leave their impression in the world dies...like Heath, Aaliyah, River Phoenix, and so many of the child stars who commit suicide and die from drugs. It is good to see that while they were alive, they did leave a huge impression on us to the point where we go and see the last movie, buy the last CD and watch as many of their movies and listen to as many of their songs as we can. That is how a lot of legends are made. Overnight, they are more popular when they die, than rather, when they were alive.
It truly is a morbid world we live in...to obsess over the death of a star, rather than make them more popular while they were alive. It is rather disturbing how big of a following the stars get after they die. It makes me think that I should appreciate them now, while they are alive. I still hang my head in shame that River died at such a young age. It still saddens me now that Heath will never make another movie again. I absolutely loved him in 10 Things I Hate About You. Heath, you will always be remembered as a wonderful actor who touched many hearts. It's sad that you left us at such a young age. You still had your whole life ahead of you, especially with Matilda. I think you were much too beautiful for this ugly world. Rest in Peace Heath! You deserve it! Here is your rest that you so very needed!
In conclusion, Dark Knight would not have done as well because it brought in a whole new audiance that were/are followers of Heath Ledger. His death just simply brought fans the opportunity to say their final goodbyes and wish him a peaceful rest.
