Indoor gardening: Growing your own vegetables and herbs indoors during the winter

Do you wish to have an indoor garden in your home? Now, this is a really nice idea! Many of you may think that you can set up an indoor garden without any problem. All you have to do is to find a proper place for it. But it also involves other important things to be looked into. The most important one is the amount of light in the garden. If you are living in an area or building where it is rare to get a sufficient amount of light, you may relinquish since many of us believe that it is impossible to make an indoor garden in places with insufficient light. But one should not forget that if you have the determination you can find the way out to make the idea of indoor garden a success. You just need to accept the challenge and go ahead.

Selecting the Best Place:




Generally, the interior of a house or a building do not have enough light. Even if there is not plenty of light available you can still make an indoor garden as you have the option to provide artificial light. Out of many available choices, use of fluorescent lights may the best alternative to grow herbs in you indoor garden. Other options are also available for the lighting of your indoor garden. These include, using a combination of incandescent lamps and high -intensity discharge lights like halogen light, or mercury vapor lamp. If you intend to make a small garden, owing to the limitation of the area inside, the best choice will be to use grow lights for illumination. Grow lights do not occupy much space and help the seedlings to start sprouting early. As such seedlings get a better growth. Fluorescent lights have the advantage that they radiate less heat and are, therefore, safer to use. The seedling should be kept in a warm place to start sprouting. It is not a bad idea to set up the herb garden some where in a warm room inside. Selecting your laundry room for the purpose is also a good choice. You can select any room which gets plenty of sunlight. May be you do not have a room where you can get direct sunlight. In such a case, you should try to find out a room in your house or apartment where there is sunlight on outer side of its walls for most of the time. That room will be the warmest of all the other rooms. As the seeds start sprouting the amount of light on the seeds must be gradually increased. This method is most successful for the growth of the seed.
