Downloadable game review: Crayon Physics Deluxe

Crayon Physics Deluxe is a game created by "Kloonigames" which is available at "crayonphysics.com" for $19.95. The website immediately brags that the game was the grand prize winner at the Independent Games Festival 2008, so needless to say that my expectations were fairly high for the game before I had even downloaded or installed it.

The game begins in a basic menu screen where the player has to ability to change all of the options and start the game. You are slowly guided into the unusual style of gameplay where the player must guide his ball into a star, which completes the level and progresses the game onto the next stage. This sounds like a remarkably dull concept at first, however after a few minutes play you realise that there are many possibilities for this game. Many different shapes can be drawn all of which conform to the basic laws of physics perfectly, which means that almost anything can be created with enough skill and patience. The controls are a little difficult to master on a touchpad, although they are very versatile when used with a mouse; this isn't too much inconvenience for a laptop player though you might want to invest in a USB mouse for accurate play. There is also a level editor mode so that you can create your own levels and send them to your friends. This extends the lifespan on the game greatly even though there are already 70 premade levels to play on.

The graphics of the game are based around a child's crayon drawings, which at first seems a bit bland and boring but it rapidly becomes appealing as every single level materializes before your eyes ready for you to play with. The environments gradually get more complicated, as well as prettier to look at. You can even switch the colour of your crayon so that your drawings look attractive!

The sounds of the game are fairly good as far as a downloadable arcade-style title goes however the music does eventually start to get annoying. The options screen allows you to adjust all of the music and sound effects on the other hand so it doesn't become annoying and you can easily replace it with your own music in a hidden window. The sound effects within the game are fairly basic, as there are different effects for when the items are dropped to the ground or a star is collected. The sounds haven't been over-complicated and so the game retains a simple feel very well.

The game overall is very innovative; the graphics are sweet and nice to look at. The great part of this game however is the physics and the style of gameplay that is involved. The game is easily worth the $19.95 price tag and I would highly recommend this game to anyone who likes puzzle games or just games in general. This game is one of the best downloadable games that I have played and therefore I give it 5/5!
