How to survive (even thrive) in difficult economic times

A prudent person does not and should not see life through rose colored glasses. It makes a lot of sense for every right thinking person to recognize this fact. In every economic system, there are always cycles of boom and recession. For this reason, difficult economic times should be expected once in a while.

If you know this already, then you should also realize that a recession is not a death sentence. It is possible to survive and even thrive in difficult economic times. All you have to do is become a master at recognizing the signs of difficult times and taking the right measures.

The first step is to be pragmatic. Learn to accept the truth of every economic situation even if it is downright unfavorable. We live in difficult economic times. Accept this fact and try not to live in denial. This way, you can begin to plan and use your plan to cope with any adversity.

The next step is to keep your eyes wide open. Even in difficult economic times, there are great opportunities. Recognize these opportunities and you can profit from them while less perceptive people are busy complaining.

Again, during tough times, you have to be tough as well. Do not underestimate the seriousness of harsh economic realities on the ground. On the other hand, don't be intimidated by difficulties either. Recognize the hard times and take measures to help yourself overcome them. This is the way to survive and even thrive when things are tough.

In addition, you need to be versatile. You need to be flexible and innovative in your approach. If you run a business, during difficult times, you need to be more aggressive to survive. If sales are low, run a promotion and carry out aggressive advertising campaigns. If you are a worker, work hard and make yourself invaluable to your employer. This ensures that you continue to survive and this is the name of the game - SURVIVE!

Of course, it goes without saying that you need to put your investor cap on. In an era of low stock prices, a depressed real estate industry and collapsing businesses, a shrewd investor can make a killing. How? By recognizing that the recession will not last forever, that's how!

This is the time to buy stocks at a fraction of their normal prices. This is the time to buy foreclosed homes and this is the right time to buy over a business that is not doing too well.

Meanwhile, don't expect any immediate profits for any of these investments. You are buying for the future. So, cut your expenses and be ready to give it some time. In every adversity, there are bound to be opportunities. Your duty as a smart person is to recognize these opportunities and profit from them.

Finally, let us give the final word to the American writer and philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson. "There is a solution to every problem. The sun shines after every storm and the soul's highest duty is to be of good cheer". That says it all. Have an optimistic mindset and you will survive and even thrive in difficult economic times.
