What makes something funny?

Summary of Funny

What was the first joke ever told? Who was the first entity to tell a joke? When did the recipients of said joke finally, if ever, get it? Humor, the category in which jokes fall under comes in many flavors and it's documented history like with everything else never tells the whole story. Somewhere, sometime, in some back alley, on some roof, in some car, on some horse, in an intergalactic vessel speeding away from a dying sun, somewhere in all of creation from now to the beginning of time the first joke was told. The Primal Pun. The Alpha-Funny the Genesis of Giggles. Why? What purpose would it serve? From both experience and through reference the act of laughing is a biological mechanism to relieve stress. To heal the soul. A mechanism to process conflicts in memory and resolve issues in a healthy manner. But what was the first joke? The language or species in which it originated is irrelevant, funny is funny. It is universal. It is easily translated through anecdote alone. It is a crossroad by which circumstance meets satire. The first joke I would only hope occurred when sentience acquired more than one perspective. A comparison was no doubt observed or detected by whatever means such sentience possessed, a ridiculous comparison made which denotes that an element of contrast is always present, funny sticks out like sore thumb or whatever one might use to hitch a ride across the galaxy. It's a smiley faced flag on a sea of seriousness. Or the primal comedic occurrence may have been situational and may have even stemmed from the first awkward moment. All possible byproducts of consciousness. It may have been related to the first bowel movement or even more probable the first flatulent act. The Alpha Flatulence, if I may be so bold, evoked the first laugh, following the first grimace, no doubt. I have it now , I have the first joke ever told!

Two of the first beings to come into existence had their overfill of legumes or whatever passes for legumes in that part of the universe and one of them, having not properly formed the necessary enzymes to aid in the first digestive process, broke wind. The other sentient being having never heard such phenomena or experienced it's aftermath, exclaimed

"What was that?"

I don't know" responded the other, "I think the dog did it."

The second to the first being to set foot in this multi-verse looks around and responds," What dog?"

And there you have it ladies and gentlemen. The First Funny. And to my complete lack of surprise, still funny, to this day and will continue to be so, long after evidence of the last flatulent act has grown stale. Which brings to me a question of equal or even greater pertinence. What will be the last joke ever told? I could go into another long spiel, dish out endless speculation or I could employ circular reasoning the likes of which you never seen and boldly declare that the first joke is the last joke!

The last two beings in existence come upon what appears to be a crate of legumes or some such. After taking their fill one of them, who's production of enzymes have fallen off due to the sparsity of food, breaks wind. The other still somewhat delirious from lack of nutrition fails to recognize the source or identify the nature of it's aftermath exclaims,

"What was that?"

"I don't know" responds the other. "I think the dog did it."

The second to the last being in the multi-verse looks around then asks," What dog?"

I can say, no more.
