The primary distinction between console gaming and PC gaming is the versatility of the systems. While some consoles can offer superior graphics and are much easier for some to handle due to their controllers, the PC gamer can tweak, improve, and customize his or her system to levels that console gamers can only dream.

Most advocates for console gaming argue that consoles now offer HD graphics, increased gaming speed, and ease of use. However, even moderately experienced computer gamers know that by adding and customizing their systems, PCs can easily rival any HD television and modern game console for graphics and performance. The computer industry is also releasing a constant flow of new and improved products, making it possible for PC gamers to update and improve their systems as much as they desire. Console gamers need to wait for the next huge release of an entirely new system in order to improve their gaming experience, and purchasing a brand-new and heavily imporoved game system is a costly investment.

The versatility of a PC comes in two parts. First, many games which release for consoles are later released in PC versions, regardless of their original affiliation (Xbox and Playstation games are often both released for PC). So while console gamers either spend months agonizing over the choice of consoles which would provide them with the most appropriate selection of games or spend excessive sums of money by purchasing multiple different systems, PC users most often have the best and most diverse selection of games available to any type of gamer anywhere in the world.

The controllers add the second facet of versatility to the PC gamer's arena. Console controllers are designed to fit the gamer's hand and to provide all necessary commands within easy finger-reach. However, they are severely limited when it comes to customization of controls. PC users have an entire keyboard of over 80 buttons, each of which they can program to control any function within the game that they please. This method allows for a wide variety of users to be comfortable when playing their game, regardless of hand size, shape, or dexterity. Additionally, the mouse usually used in conjunction with the keyboard is a much more responsive and accurate tool to control fine movement such as aiming a weapon. Also, if the PC user still wishes to use a handheld controller like console gamers are privy to, they can easily purchase one which is designed to work with a PC. Additionally, the PC gamer's available arsenal includes joysticks, steering wheels, and even a few motion-sensitive controllers.

Computer gaming is, has always been, and will likely continue to be, the reigning king of versatile and customizable gaming. The level to which any experienced computer whiz can fine-tune and upgrade his or her machine, from its appearance, to base hardware, to graphics settings, to in-game controls, will always give an edge to PC gamers.
