Every American is aware that April 15th is our federal tax filing deadline. For the country that is pro-ported to be the leader of the free world, our country, the United States of America, has the worst tax code and system in the free world. It is unfortunate that few people realize how the Internal Revenue Code has evolved and that it contains sections that were specifically written for wealthy individuals and organizations.
What the TEA (Taxed Enough Already) parties are doing is calling attention to this unfairness. Over the years many attempts have been made to show that federal income taxes are illegal and not part of the Constitution. Many ideas have been put forth to establish a fair tax system. However, politicians are loath to tackle this problem because of the huge amounts of money spent by lobbyists to keep things as they are. After all, tax attorneys, accountants, tax preparation companies, income tax software companies, et al make their living interpreting the current tax code and preparing tax returns.
The beauty of the tea parties is that they were held in every state and echoed the sentiments of many Americans that with so many things wrong in our economy, it is now time to finally fix the the tax system by eliminating all of the sections related to special interests, lowering the tax rates or better still; eliminate the current tax system and replace it with a system that will be fair to all Americans.
We all know what the purpose of the original Boston Tea Parties were. They called attention to an oppressive tea tax imposed by the British to extract more money from the original thirteen colonies. That is their purpose now. Americans know that taxes are necessary and we also know we aren't being taxed fairly. Consequently, tea parties call attention to the unfortunate fact that our government is horribly out of touch with our citizens.
Thomas Jefferson said it best when he said "The people should not be afraid of the government. The government should be afraid of the people." This isn't to say anyone is proposing violence against the government. Rather, people are demanding fair treatment and change. The tea party initiative is saying the time is now for tax reform. A look back at the periods of prosperity in America will indicate a simple truth: low taxes promote prosperity and high taxes bring on recession. One does not need to be a Nobel Prize winning economist to understand this simple truth.
We have a new president. A president that has already
