There is a fine line between a good sales person, and a fake sales person. To be a good sales person, you need to be able to relate to people, and figure out what makes them tick. You need to be able to come off as reliable, gracious, and understanding of the needs of your client. If your client or customer doesn't feel like you are meeting their needs, what are the chances of them buying from you?
When you go to a car dealership, what are you looking for? Probably someone who is going to show you the cars that you are looking for, and something in your price range. I hate when I go car shopping, and someone is trying to sell me something too expensive, or when you get to the part where you finish the deal, they try to sell extras. Not only is it annoying, but it can kill the deal, if you go around and try to sell what will make you the most money.
To be a good salesperson, you have to know the line between selling for a little more profit, and still fulfilling the needs of the customer. There really is nothing wrong with suggesting accessories that might make the product more enjoyable, but you have to make it sound like you are helping out the consumer. If you are selling an Xbox, you might consider also adding another controller, or maybe a game or two. But you wouldn't want to sell them a big screen TV, and the video game chair as well, unless your customer asks for it.
You have to know the type of consumer that you are dealing with at any given time. If someone doesn't know what they want, you have to make the best possible guess. If you see someone who looks like they might be a first time buyer, or young, or old, you have to make your guess based on that. If someone is coming in to buy a TV, you have to ask a lot of questions so that you can get the correct type of TV. If you can do that, you can earn repeat business, which makes selling that much easier.
Having a friendly demeanor, and being approachable is a good way to make sales. People trust those who are friendly, and easygoing, and if you are seen as going out of your way to help your customer, they will trust you more. Make sure you know what you are talking about, be professional, and courteous at all times. Showing the ability to get your hands dirty too, and do some of the legwork to help your customers get what they need will make them more eager to buy from you as well.
Being a good salesperson takes a lot of skill. Not only do you need to know people, but you need to know business as well. While it is most important to be able to get along with people, you have to know what people want, and how to get it to them. If you cannot, you will fail regardless of how great you are with people. Remember its a fine line, and you have to walk it at all times.
